Middelheim Museum has acquired the key work from Erwin Wurm’s exhibition Wear me out. The bendy boat, known as ‘Misconceivable’ (2010), has found a permanent home in the museum’s collection.
The work is typical for Erwin Wurm, presenting a form that is familiar and yet subtly different from the reality we expect. This work brings out a sense of doubt and uncertainty in those who observe it: after all, its very title – Misconceivable – demonstrates its likely misinterpretation. Like other works by Wurm, Misconceivable represents an exploration of the limits as well as the opportunities of three-dimensional art, and incorporates both an absurd sense of humour and a bitter undertone of impotence.
The placement of the boot ensures that it will become an important landmark for the museum. The large scale of the work is a remarkable element at the main entrance of the art park in the Middelheimlaan.
In response to the museum’s purchase of this work, Erwin Wurm also donated two others: Pedestal for One Minute Sculptures (2011) and Disziplin der Subjektivität (2011), both of which he created for the Wear me out exhibition.

Erwin Wurm is an Austrian sculptor and photographer born in Bruck an der Mur in 1954 who lives and works in Vienna. Trained at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna between 1979 and 1982.
In his work appear in both the artist himself, as other people working with him in absurd statuesque poses, in most cases with the use of everyday objects. Its images are not simply the documentation of a performance. With this procedure is to constantly review the concept of sculpture in two respects: first, relocating to humanize objects and, secondly, objectified the human body.

Erwin Wurm (born 1954) is an Austrian artist born in Bruck an der Mur / Styria. He currently lives and works in Vienna and Limburg, Austria.
Since the late 1980s he has developed an ongoing series of “One Minute Sculptures,” in which he poses himself or his models in unexpected relationships with everyday objects close at hand, prompting the viewer to question the very definition of sculpture. He seeks to use the “shortest path” in creating a sculpture—a clear and fast, sometimes humorous, form of expression. As the sculptures are fleeting and meant to be spontaneous and temporary, the images are only captured in photos or on film.
In The artist who swallowed the world (Hatje Cantz) Wurm is quoted as saying: “I am interested in the everyday life. All the materials that surrounded me could be useful, as well as the objects, topics involved in contemporary society. My work speaks about the whole entity of a human being: the physical, the spiritual, the psychological and the political.”
Erwin Wurm is known for his humorous approach to formalism. About the use of humor in his work, Wurm says in an interview: “If you approach things with a sense of humor, people immediately assume you’re not to be taken seriously. But I think truths about society and human existence can be approached in different ways. You don’t always have to be deadly serious. Sarcasm and humor can help you see things in a lighter vein.”
He is mentioned in the Red Hot Chili Peppers music video Can’t Stop, in which a sign states that his art was an inspiration for the video. In a recent iTunes interview Flea is quoted as saying Wurm’s picture of a man with a pencil in his nose was a significant influence on the video (Flea himself appears in the video, at a certain point, with markers in his nostrils, pencils in his ears and paint pot caps over his eyes). The photos in “One Minute Sculptures” were impulsively made and are quite bizarre.
Most recently, Erwin Wurm has worked on a series of ‘fat car’ sculptures which are “puffy, obese, life-size sculptures that bulge like overfilled sacks”. The first of his Fat Cars was developed with Opel designers but they were unsuccessful in achieving the kind of shape that Wurm had in mind. In order to create the quality of fat, the artist uses polyurethane foam and styrofoam covered with lacquer.
Erwin Wurm’s works are apart of prestigious collections worldwide including Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, The Walker Art Center, Museum Ludwig, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Musee d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, and the Centre Pompidou.

Erwin Wurm es un escultor y fotógrafo austríaco nacido en Bruck an der Mur en 1954 que vive y trabaja en Viena. Formado en la Academia de Artes Aplicadas de Viena y en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Viena entre los años 1979 y 1982.
En su obra aparecen tanto el propio artista, como otras personas que colaboran con él, en absurdas poses esculturales, en la mayoría de los casos con el empleo de objetos cotidianos. Sus imágenes no son otra cosa que la documentación de una performance. Con este proceder trata de revisar constantemente el concepto de escultura en dos aspectos: de un lado, reubicando los objetos para humanizarlos y, de otro, objetualizando el cuerpo humano.
El video de la canción “Can’t Stop” de la banda Red Hot Chili Peppers está inspirado en la obra de este artista.

一分钟雕塑

House Attack

Wurm最近开始做一些带有光泽的雕塑,比如他的最新作品Hypnosis,它们的外表都很光滑,看起来像镜子一样。当观众站在它们旁边的时候,就会反射出他们的影子,而且这一切都是瞬间发生的,在那个瞬间,观众也成为了那件作品的一部分。可以说,这也是一分钟的雕塑——被另外一种方式表现了出来。
Hypnosis

Современное искусство очень часто логике совсем не следует. Но тем оно и интересно. Эрвин Вурм (Erwin Wurm) является одновременно и художником, и скульптором, и фотографом. Поэтому и творчество у него такое разностороннее. На его работы нужно просто смотреть и чувствовать. А что чувствовать – это уже у каждого по-своему. Эрвин живет и работает в Вене и Нью-Йорке. По всему миру прошло более 150 его персональных выставок.

Erwin Wurm (1954), který pochází z rakouského městečka Bruck an der Mur, se na mezinárodní umělecké scéně proslavil s takzvanými minutovými sochami nebo pak komickými sochami jako například Fat Car, které zkreslují nám velice známé předměty. Povedený kousek s názvem Narrow House, miniatura domku jeho rodičů, zmáčkla na šestinu své normální velikosti, se stala magnetem pro diváky na Bienále v Benátkách v roce 2011.
