MASK IN MOTION IS A KINETIC SCULPTURE THAT CATCHES THE VIEWER BETWEEN MODEL AND SHADOW MAPS, WRITING AND ERASING THE VIEWER’S SHADOW IN AND OUT OF THE WORK AS IT TURNS.
AN OVOID, MASK-SHAPED CONCAVE FORM IS SCULPTURALLY IMPRINTED WITH A TRANSLUCENT, DISTORTED MODEL CITY, SCALE 1:1750. THE PIECE ROTATES, CASTING AN AMPLIFIED SHADOW OF ITS GEOMETRY ONTO THE WALLS, CATCHING THE VIEWER BETWEEN MINIATURE MAP AND HUMAN-SCALED ROOM.
THE MAP RECORDS THE LAYERED MILLENNIA OF MARKS MADE BY THOUSANDS OF UNSEEN HUMAN HANDS. THE WORK CONSIDERS THE DAILY CALIBRATION MANY OF US UNDERTAKE AS WE STRIVE TO LOCATE OURSELVES WITHIN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE INFORMATION WE CHOOSE TO SEE AND TURN AWAY FROM, CAUGHT AS WE ARE WITHIN THE MAN-MADE EPOCH WE NOW KNOW AS THE ANTHROPOCENE.

Se você ainda não sabe quem é Esmeralda Devlin, ou apenas Es, está mais do que na hora de conhecer. Ela é uma artista e designer fora de série, responsável por criar esculturas gigantes para as turnês de Beyoncé (“Formation Tour”), U2 (“Innocence and Experience Tour”), Kanye West, Lorde (Coachella, 2017), Adele, Pet Shop Boys, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus (“Bangerz Tour”), entre outros artistas do Olimpo da indústria fonográfica.
Com uma pegada super hi-tech, ela foi escolhida para desenvolver grandes projetos ao redor do mundo, desde o palco de premiações como o Grammy e Brit Awards, até o pavilhão do Reino Unido na Expo 2020 de Dubai. Em entrevista ao “Guardian” concedida em 2016, a artista revelou o que a inspira a pensar em palcos cada vez mais engenhosos. “Tudo parte de como o artista se porta na primeira reunião que fazemos”, disse Es. “Penso e observo como ele gostaria de ser visto pelo público e começo a trabalhar a partir disso”, explicou sobre seu processo criativo.
Trabalhando com design desde 1995, ela projetou sua primeira cenografia de palco em 2003. Os responsáveis por “criar o monstro” foram os britânicos da banda Wire. Dois anos depois, Kanye West a descobriu e fez um pedido um tanto desafiador: repensar todos seu show em apenas dez dias.
“Preciso me conectar com o projeto para poder criar coisas belas. Mas não necessariamente gostar profundamente da música dos artistas que me contratam”, refletiu a designer. “Às vezes, só conheço alguns dos principais hits e pronto. Agora, se eu detestar completamente, não existe condição de trabalharmos juntos”.
