Fabrice Hyber sets out to examine the way we communicate and mimic the endless affinities between ideas. What interests Hyber is engaging people with everyday life to invent new modes of behavior.
In his mental spa with Faust, he deploys one of his POF’s (Prototypes d ‘Objets en Fonctionnement, created between 1991-2012) to interpret and resolve the complexity of reality by constantly searching for possible, or impossible, hypotheses, a kind of activism to explore endless possibility and infinite variations for art-making.

Hyber’s POF seems to have leaped out from Faust’s suburban backyard museum like a surreal cartoon. At the center of his installation is a life-size boy mannequin and a children’s swing set; the boy wears a transparent plastic bubble suit that hermetically protects him from his surroundings except for a sealed hole. A swing stands nearby in which a silicone penis is built into the seat. forging a direct connection to the boy’s pubescence and sexual freedom. As is typical in his POF’s, Hyber aims to change our consciousness and uses of objects, with reinvented forms suggesting new behaviors and again in this case, he offers a way to charge our imagination with individuality and expressive genius so that ultimately, mankind can fill Faust’s Museum with life-affirming artistic possibility that has no end.

Fabrice Hyber modifie ainsi la conscience et la pratique que nous avons de ces objets puisque leurs formes réinventées induisent de nouveaux comportements. En déplaçant leur fonction originelle, les POF génèrent un mode d’appropriation singulier et nécessitent souvent l’invention d’un mode d’emploi pour un usage en constante évolution, questionnant ainsi la relation que l’on entretient avec les objets du quotidien et plus généralement l’œuvre d’art.

Fabrice Hyber, artiste prolifique présent depuis plus de vingt-cinq ans sur la scène artistique internationale et lauréat du Lion d’Or de la Biennale de Venise en 1997, a construit un œuvre rhizomatique où chaque pièce se fait l’écho d’une autre, créant ainsi un ensemble protéiforme qui reflète le foisonnement de sa pensée. S’il en matérialise le processus à l’aide de la peinture, la sculpture, l’installation, la vidéo ou encore en investissant le champ de l’entreprise et du commerce, c’est bien le dessin qui est à l’origine de toutes ses œuvres.

À cet égard, les POF sont symptomatiques de ces mécanismes, sur un mode léger, inventif, insolite, ludique, parfois utopique, critique ou satirique, mais toujours humoristique. L’exposition monographique du MAC/VAL, entre en résonance avec celles proposées parallèlement par le Palais de Tokyo, la Fondation Maeght et l’institut Pasteur, pour éclairer l’œuvre de l’un des artistes français les plus bouillonnants et inventifs d’aujourd’hui.

Fabrice Hyber présente pour la première fois l’intégralité des POF (Prototypes d’Objets en Fonctionnement), réalisés entre 1991 et 2012, – comme le Ballon carré – POF n°65 ou Oto, la voiture à double tranchant – POF n°87, ou encore Ted Hyber – POF n° 51 -, soit plus de 150 oeuvres et autant de façons de placer le visiteur au coeur du dispositif, en l’invitant à les manipuler.

Fabrice Hyber began creating his collection of Prototypes d’Objets en Fonctionnement (POF) in 1991, and now for the first time all 150 works are on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Val-de-Marne.

We recently featured a collection of subverted everyday objects produced by Jeremy Hutchinson, but while his Erratum are exactly that – things designed to be produced and consumed (or displayed) – Hyber’s POFs are to be interacted with, evolving and unfinished, provoking and challenging the viewers perceptions in a humorous way.

We are certainly challenged. Hyber says POF, we say WTF? A couple of the objects we’ve selected here are merely bizarre, some brilliant… but others look like they have come straight out of a sex dungeon. The choker had us choking, the plastic suit had us hyperventilating, and as for the swing, well let’s just say we wouldn’t be having a go on that in a hurry. Haven’t got the anatomy or the inclination.
