As the proportions of people evolve to the standards of western consumerism so may the proportions of objects that surround us, this project is a preview. We designed this chair with super size aesthetics in mind.

For their hundredth anniversary Arco asked 12 designers (a.o. Jurgen Bey, Ineke Hans, Job Smeets and Joris Laarman), to give a vision on the future of furniture.

Inspired by the abundance of bad furniture in the world, Flavorwire has just dropped its list of the 10 worst designs of the last decade. This here is XXL Chair, by Dutch-based designers Janneke Hooymans and Frank Tjepkema, which is described as “[a]n abstraction of a sprawling, obese mammal with a tattoo on one ‘leg’ reminiscent of a nightmare inducing scene” in the 1995 film Se7en. (Curbed would like to rename the chair “Hungover Michelin Man.”)

Janneke Hooymans Since 2002, Janneke Hooymans has joined forces with Frank Tjepkema bringing in here expertise in the field of interior design and styling. Noteworthy projects are: the interior of the Unox Soup Factory and here contribution to the design of the Glasgow Science center.
Frank Tjepkema is a Dutch designer based in Amsterdam. Frank Tjepkema developed a strong interest in brand related design issues which lead him to working on a variety of projects for well known brands such as Philips, British Airways, Ben, Droog Design, Levis, Heineken, Do. In every project Frank Tjepkema’s objective is to combine conceptual innovative ideas with functional intelligence and visual elegance. In 2004 Tjep. won the Dutch Design Awards in the categories interior and fashion design.

Designer Frank Tjepkema stelde tijdens de Dutch Design Week vast dat maar weinig designers reageren op de economische recessie. De eigenaar van bureau Tjep ontwierp daarom zelf de Recession Chair. De stoel is de opvolger van de XXL Chair uit 2005.

Frank Tjepkema (1970) werd geboren in Zwitserland en groeide op in Brussel, New York en Genève. Op zijn achttiende kwam hij naar Nederland om industriële vormgeving te studeren aan de TU in Delft. Al snel stapte hij over naar de Design Academy in Eindhoven.

In 1996 studeerde hij cum laude af. Dat deed hij twee jaar later nog eens aan het Sandberg Instituut. In 1999 werd hij gevraagd om in te vallen voor zijn vroegere docent Herman Kuijer aan de Design Academy. Tjepkema gaf een jaar ontwerples. Twee jaar later werd hij hoofd van de design afdeling op de Rietveld academie in Amsterdam.

Ondertussen werkte Tjepkema korte periodes voor reclamebureau BMB en de designafdeling van Philips. In 2001 richtte hij zijn eigen bureau Tjep. op. De afgelopen jaren ontwierp Tjep. producten, interieurs, verpakkingen, sierraden en meubels voor grote namen als Ben, British Airways, Bavaria, Heineken en de NS. Een grote mijlpaal in de carrière van Tjepkema was het winnen van de Dutch Design Award in 2004, zowel in de categorie ‘interior design’ als ‘fashion design’.
