Datagrove was a commissioned installation for the ZERO1 “Seeking Silicon Valley” 2012 Biennial. For three months is was located in the courtyard of the historic California Theater (home of the San Jose Opera). The Datagrove thrives on information from its urban environment. It renders invisible data and atmospheric phenomena into variable intensities of light and sound. It provides shelter and a place of calm to contemplate data streams from sources near and far. The grove’s luminescent fibers gently sway with the breeze and respond to the proximity of visitors with quiet whispering sonic undulations. It aggregates local trending Twitter feeds from San Jose and then whispers these back through speakers and LCDs displays woven into the Datagrove. It functions as a social media “whispering wall” that harnesses data that is normally nested and hidden in smart phones, and amplifies this discourse into the public realm.

Datagrove was produced using advanced digital fabrication techniques and integrates a range of custom electronics including sensors, text to speech modules, LEDS and LCDS. The installation is capable of sensing and responding to people in its immediate proximity.

Design: Jason Kelly Johnson & Nataly Gattegno
Team Members: Ripon DeLeon with Osma Dossani and Jonathan Izen, assisted by David Spittler. Fabrication: MACHINIC Digital Fabrication & Consulting, San Francisco.

Datagrove is a multimedia installation by San Francisco based artists Future Cities Lab (Jason Kelly Johnson and Nataly Gattegno). By harvesting trending Twitter feeds from its local environment, Datagrove performs as both a social media whispering wall and a new type of community hub. It renders typically invisible data streams into variable intensities of light and sound. The grove’s magenta fibers gently pulsate and respond to the proximity of visitors with quiet whispering sonic undulations. Datagrove was designed to create a mysterious and meditative space woven into the rich fabric of downtown San Jose’s SoFA Arts District. The installation appears nested within the beautiful California Theater Courtyard, a formerly gated space that was transformed into a publicly accessible gathering area for the duration of the installation, from September 12 – December 8, 2012.The concept of this work is innovative because it uses architecture to transform invisible and intangible data into something that is visible and reactionary. The top five trending twitter keywords, updated in real time, are mapped to the five glowing pods within the armature. As visitors approach Datagrove, the pods glow brighter. When visitors are within 4 feet of a pod, as determined by proximity sensors, one of the top 5 trending Twitter feeds for the local zip code is spoken. The installation thus reflects the interests of the local community at a particular moment in time. For example, when the San Jose Sharks were playing at the nearby arena, sports terms were common, and the day that Justin Bieber was performing nearby, versions of his name appeared in all five pods.

Future Cities Lab is an experimental design studio, workshop and architectural think tank operating globally out of San Francisco, California. Since 2002, founding principals Jason Kelly Johnson and Nataly Gattegno have collaborated on a range of award-winning projects exploring the intersections of art and design with advanced fabrication technologies, robotics, responsive building systems and public space. Future Cities Lab is an interdisciplinary studio employing an adventurous team of interaction designers, architects, technologists, digital craftspeople, urban ecologists and more.

While we are deeply rooted in this community of vanguard innovators, makers and thinkers, we also practice, teach and exhibit our work internationally. Over the past ten years we have carefully crafted a company that is deliberately nimble, experimental and independent. For each project we assemble a unique team of experts to address the specific needs of our clients. Every year we take on only a few select projects that interest us most. This allows us to work with clients one-on-one and focus our design and research efforts on projects that matter most to us.
