Gabriel Kuri ha sido aclamado internacionalmente por su obra escultórica y plástica que provoca discusión sobre lo efímero del consumismo, la energía y la información en nuestros tiempos. A través de su uso de materiales inesperados, como tarjetas de crédito, recibos de pago, y botellas de agua, por nombrar sólo algunos, Kuri explora las posibilidades de la escultura con gran sentido del humor.

Gabriel Kuri nació en la Ciudad de México en 1970. Es egresado de la Escuela Nacional De Artes Plásticas, estudió Arte en Goldsmiths College University en Londres y formó parte de un taller impartido por Gabriel Orozco, uno de los artistas visuales mexicanos contemporáneos más influyentes de la última década. Kuri ha mostrado su obra en exposiciones individuales y colectivas alrededor del mundo.

Born 1970 in Mexico City
Gabriel Kuri creates visually refined sculptures, collages, installations, and photographs, working from repurposed natural, industrial, and mass-produced objects (insulation foam, shells, soda cans, and stones, to name only a few). In Kuri’s work, which is often responsive to its exhibition site, questions of form and the nature of sculpture are of equal importance to more social, political, and economic concerns regarding the circulation of commodities (artworks included) and information within a global market.
For .)(., he arranged an upended industrial waste container to mirror a curved metal plate. The forms lean toward each other but never touch. Two large stones abut the objects on either side, which, despite material distinctions, results in a curious symmetry, reflecting the shape of its title. By placing industrial and commercial objects in a gallery space, Kuri removes them from their intended function, forcing the audience to consider what they would normally do. Kuri’s forms arrest the viewer with their familiarity while calling attention to the fact that all objects that surround us are coded and marked before we encounter them.

Né en 1970 à Mexico, Gabriel Kuri vit et travaille à Mexico et Bruxelles.
Il a été diplômé en 1992 de l’Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas U.N.A.M. de Mexico (1992) et en 1995 du Goldsmiths College of Art.
Il est représenté par les galeries Esther Shipper (Berlin), Sadie Coles HQ (Londres), kurimanzutto (Mexico) et Galleria Franco Noero (Turin).
