The 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed central feature has been unveiled, celebrating120 years of Mercedes-Benz in motorsport.

The sculpture – measuring 45 metres in length, rising 26 metres in the air and weighing 160 tonnes – was designed by artist Gerry Judah with structural engineering by Capita. The team – which has designed the central features for the past ten years – has created yet another breathtaking centrepiece for the Festival of Speed which, for the first time, reached over the top of Goodwood House. This year’s Festival takes place 26-29 June.

Two cars spanning 80 years form an integral part of the sculpture; a replica of a 1934 Mercedes-Benz W 25 Silver Arrow, and a Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W04 – the same chassis raced by Lewis Hamilton in 15 Grands Prix in 2013. Together, the W25 and the F1 W04 show the first – and currently last – of the eight-cylinder Silver Arrows Grand Prix racers.

Designer Gerry Judah has created this white knotted sculpture of a race track for car brand Lotus at Goodwood Festival of Speed, which took place in West Sussex last weekend.
The structure features six historic Lotus Formula 1 cars secured onto 150 metres of winding road.
The hollow, 60-tonne sculpture is made from sheets of steel that have been joined at the edges to create triangular sections, which are self-supporting and require no internal frame.
This construction technique was used in tribute to Lotus founder and designer Colin Chapman (1928-1982) who introduced the monocoque chassis to automobile racing, enabling the chassis and body of a car to be made in one piece.
Judah creates an enormous car sculpture for the festival every year and you can see his previous ones here.
It is 2012 and every year a different car company sponsors a centrepiece sculpture for the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This is the sixteenth in a row that Gerry Judah has designed and produced, and this year it is bigger, more daring and beautiful, and more spectacular than ever before.
The sponsor this year is Lotus Cars. The sculpture itself is six historic Lotus Formula 1 cars driving on a winding road that has been tied into the shape of a half-hitch, or trefoil, knot. The road length is 150 metres, and the whole installation weighs 60 tonnes. There are six classic Formula 1 cars: the Lotus 32B (Jim Clark 1965), Lotus 49B (Graham Hill 1968), Lotus 72E (Emerson Fittipaldi 1973), Lotus 79 (Mario Andretti 1978), Lotus 99T (Ayrton Senna 1987) and the latest Lotus F1 Team challenger.
The sculpture is a triangular section, each of the three sides is what we call a continuously variable curve developable surface. This means that we start with flat sheet metal curves that can be rolled up and joined into three dimensional luxurious shapes. The result is a lightweight, extremely strong and rigid thin-shell structure, with no internal framework or core. Inside it is all empty space and what you see is the structure itself. The sculpture is 98% empty space. In automobile terms this would be a monocoque body, a tribute to the legendary designer and Lotus founder Colin Chapman’s introduction of monocoque chassis construction to automobile racing.
What we have here is a technique for building freeform shapes. In the future we expect that lots of structures will be built like this, from bridges and large span buildings, to roller coasters, but before that we will be building some even more spectacular sculptures.

L’opera, alta 28 metri, è la sedicesima creata da Judah per il festival, appuntamento che ogni anno presenta in dettaglio una casa automobilistica.
Nel 2012 la protagonista è stata Lotus, sponsor dell’installazione di Judah: la scultura è stata progettata per catturare l’essenza di Lotus dagli esordi fino ai giorni nostri. Il circuito, le cui linee richiamano il simbolo dell’infinito, sfrutta la sezione triangolare di un nastro di metallo spesso 6mm, che da vita alla superficie di una curva continua variabile.
Le auto, prestate dal Team Classic di Lotus e da Lotus F1, comprendevano una Lotus Type 32B gialla e verde (l’auto con la qual Jim Clark si è aggiudicato la Formula Tasman in Australia e Nuova Zelanda nel 1965) e una Type 49 rossa e bianca, a bordo della quale ha gareggiato Graham Hill. Tra le altre auto, la Type 72 di Emerson Fittipaldi, più giovane campione del mondo, la Lotus 99T gialla di Ayrton Senna e l’attuale Lotus Grand Prix di Kimi Raikkonen e Romain Grosjean. Die diesjährige Skulptur wurde erneut – und damit zum sechzehnten Mal in Folge – von Gerry Judah, der sich bis zur Präsentation nicht in die Karten schauen ließ, entworfen und hergestellt. Und dieses Jahr ist sie noch größer, gewagter, schöner und spektakulärer als jemals zuvor.
Der Sponsor in diesem Jahr ist Lotus Cars. Das Kunstwerk selbst besteht aus sechs historischen Lotus Formel-1-Wagen, die auf eine gewundene und verknotet anmutende Strecke drapiert wurden. Die Streckenlänge des Gebildes beträgt 150 Meter, die gesamte Installation ist 60 Tonnen schwer. Folgende sechs Boliden sind Teil des Kunstwerks: Der Lotus 32B (Jim Clark 1965), der Lotus 49B (Graham Hill 1968), der Lotus 72E (Emerson Fittipaldi 1973) sowie der Lotus 79 (Mario Andretti 1978), der Lotus 99T (Ayrton Senna 1987) und der jüngste Herausforderer des Lotus F1 Teams.
Die Skulptur ist dreiteilig aufgebaut. Jede der drei Unterteilungen könnte man eine sich stetig wandelnde Kurvenfläche nennen. Das bedeutet, wir beginnen mit flachen Metallblechbögen, die aufgerollt und zu üppigen dreidimensionalen Formen verbunden werden können. Das Ergebnis ist eine sehr leichte, aber extrem starke und unbiegsame Dünnschalen-Struktur ohne Innengerüst oder Kern. Im Inneren des Gebildes befindet sich somit leerer Raum, wodurch nur die eigentliche Struktur selbst zu sehen ist – die gesamte Skulptur besteht zu 98 Prozent aus leerem Raum. Im Fahrzeugjargon wäre dies ein Monocoque, also eine selbsttragende Karosserie; sie stellt eine Hommage an den legendären Designer und Lotus-Gründer Colin Chapman und seine Einführung des Monocoque-Chassis im Motorsport dar.
Es handelt sich hier um eine Technik zur Konstruktion von unabhängigen, beweglichen Gebilden. Wir gehen davon aus, dass künftig viele Strukturen wie beispielsweise Brücken und andere große Distanzen überspannende Gebäude oder sogar Achterbahnen auf diese Art und Weise gebaut werden – davor werden wir jedoch noch weitere und noch spektakulärere Skulpturen erschaffen.
