Geumhyung Jeong w swoich pracach nieustannie renegocjuje relację między ludzkim ciałem a otaczającymi je przedmiotami. Używa przedmiotów codziennego użytku, którym nadaje dziwne, niepokojące życie poprzez intensywną i ryzykowną interakcję z jej własnym ciałem.
Zwykłe przedmioty po zetknięciu z ciałem artystki ożywają i stają się partnerami w grze przyciągania i odpychania, wywołując niepokój swoją zagadkową obecnością. W rezultacie powstaje poruszająca choreografia ciała i umysłu, która przekracza granice między tym, co ożywione i nieożywione, ludzkie i nieludzkie, między halucynacją a rzeczywistością. W pustej przestrzeni, oświetlonej zimnym światłem, Geumhyung Jeong bada możliwości ciała, jego zmysłowość, moc kształtowania otoczenia oraz umiejętność przechodzenia transformacji za sprawą siły pragnienia. Ostentacyjna prostota przedstawienia, jego dosłowność oraz mechaniczna dokładność brutalnie odsłaniają pustkę i samotność współczesnego człowieka. Mimo to występ jest poetycki i zabawny, a także zachęca do refleksji nad kondycją ludzką: stawia pytanie o granicę między ciałem a maszyną.

Geumhyung Jeong odbyła studia na wydziale teatralnym Uniwersytetu Hoseo w Korei, studiowała też taniec na Narodowym Uniwersytecie Sztuki w Korei oraza animację filmową w Koreańskiej Akademii Sztuki Filmowej. Swoją więdzę w zakresie tańca i choreografii, wykorzystuje, aby stworzyć unikalny i porywający performans. Teatr lalek, taniec oraz świadomość technicznych aspektów spektakli teatralnych łączą się w jedną całość – w fascynującą choreografię ciała i umysłu. Artystka tworzy własne projekty od 2004 roku. Stworzyła choreografię do spektakli takich jak: “Golden Puppet” (Złota kukiełka, 2008), “Oil Pressure Vibrator” (Wibrator olejowo ciśnieniowy, 2008), “Remote Control” (Zdalne sterowanie, 2009), “7ways” (2009), “Technical Problem” (Problem techniczny, we współpracy z Jacksonem Hong i Chungwoo Lee, 2010), “Video Camera” (Kamera wideo, 2011), “Fitness Guide” (Przewodnik po fitness, 2011), “Product Review” (Przegląd produktów, 2012). Jest również autorką filmów i animacji, w tym: “Munbangu” (2011), “RECORD STOP PLAY” (Nagrywanie stop odtwarzanie, 2011), “My Wish List”(Moja Lista życzeń, 2012). Dotychczas pokazywała swe prace na festiwalu Zürcher Theater Spektakel (Zurych/Szwajcaria), “iDans” (Stambuł/Turcja), na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Współczesnej Sztuki Scenicznej Exodos (Lublana/Słowenia), Südpol Musik Tanz Theater (Lucerna/Szwajcaria), na Festiwalu Malta w Poznaniu (Poznań/Polska), Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart/Niemcy). Jej nowa praca zostanie zaprezentowana na Spiel Arts Festival (Monachium/Niemcy) w listopadzie 2013.

Geumhyung Jeong is a choreographer, dancer and performer. In her works, she incessantly renegotiates the relationship between the human body and its surrounding objects. The artist uses everyday items, bestowing them with a strange and disturbing life through intensive and risky interactions with her own body. In her projects, she combines dancing experience with puppet theatre as well as documentary theatre.

“7 ways” consists of 7 interactions with objects – 7 rather unusual duets. Common items, after contact with the artist’s body, come to life and become partners in a game of attraction and repulsion, causing anxiety on account of its mysterious presence. As a result, a touching choreography of the mind and body arises, which transcends the boundaries between that which is animate and inanimate, human and nonhuman, between hallucination and reality. In an empty space, illuminated by cold light, Geumhyung Jeong explores the body’s possibilities, its sensuality, its power to shape the environment, as well as the ability to undergo a transformation owing to the power of desire. The ostentatious simplicity of the presentation, its literal and mechanical accuracy, brutally expose the emptiness and loneliness of modern man. Notwithstanding, the performance is poetic and playful, encourages reflection on the divisions within man, and poses the question of where in lies the border between body and machine.

Geumhyung Jeong studied at the Hoseo University Theatre and Film Department in Korea, dance at the Korean National University of Arts, and film animation at the Korean Academy of Film Arts. She utilizes her knowledge of dance and choreography to create a unique and thrilling performance. Puppetry, dance, as well as the awareness of the technical aspects of theatre, combine to become one piece – a spellbinding choreography of the body and mind. So far, she has shown her work at the festival – Zürcher Theater Spektakel (Zürich/Switzerland), “iDans” (Istanbul/Turkey), the Exodos International Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts (Ljubljana/Slovenia), Südpol Musik Tanz Theater (Lucerne/Switzerland), the Malta Festival in Poznań (Poznań/Poland), and the Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart/Germany). The artist’s latest work will be presented at the SPIELART Festival (Munich/Germany) in November of 2013.

PERFORMANCE DAY is a new, long-term project from the CCA, whose aim is to present and promote artists working in the field of performance art. From April 22nd, every third Monday of the month, within the Ujazdowski Castle and the surrounding area, there will be an opportunity to see performances by Polish as well as foreign artists. Performance Day, together with two other cyclic projects – Bank Pekao Project Room and VIDEO ROOM, will render the Monday meetings at the CCA a steadfast programme for anyone interested in contemporary art.

Born 1980 in Seoul/South Korea.
Geumhyung Jeong studied acting at Hoseo University as well as dance and performance at the Korean National University of Arts and at the Korean Academy of Film Arts.
She works as a choreographer and participated in numerous festivals, such as the 2010 EXiS (Experimental Film and Video Festival) in Seoul with her performance Oil Pressure Vibrator; Experimentica 09, Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff/UK; Seoul Marginal Theatre Festival. With 7Ways she participated at TNP (Théâtre National Populaire), Villeurbanne/France and in 2010 at the Nam June Paik Centre in South Korea.
Geumhyung Jeong’s current project Video Camera was presented at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff/UK.
