Dutch designer Hella Jongerius has designed a small table for Vitra’s new collection, which was presented at the Orgatec 2012 office fair, in Cologne. The Sphere Table is comprised of a half-globe shield perched on an individual table, blocking out noise and distraction in buzzing public spaces.

“We have rethought the idea of work in a busy lounge area,” says Hella Jongerius, whose Sphere Table seeks to demonstrate that an individual shield can help, in open spaces which tend to generate a great deal of noise and visual distractions, to the detriment of people’s ability to work.

In the case of the Sphere Table, this shield is a half-globe that can be attached to any one of the four legs of a small wooden table. The plexi-glass shield dampens noise, while its milky translucency allows the sunlight to shine through. In combination with the wooden table, the half globe spans the gap between a futuristic, glowing sphere and the familiar archetype of a traditional table.

The idea for the Sphere Table was born out of Jongerius’s commission to redesign of the North Delegates Lounge of the United Nations headquarters in New York. As part of the building’s overall renovation plan, the designer and her team focused on both improving the lounge’s existing architecture and interior design, as well as on the introduction of new, specially designed furniture pieces. The Sphere Table is the first of these new pieces to enter into production for a wider audience by Vitra.

Tra le novità presentate da Vitra a Orgatec 2012 troviamo una particolare postazione disegnata da Hella Jongerius: la Sphere Table, con uno scudo di forma emisferica, protegge contro il rumore e le distrazioni negli ambienti movimentati.

“Abbiamo riflettuto sulle opportunità di ottimizzazione del lavoro in ambienti movimentati”, spiega Hella Jongerius. “Il risultato è Sphere Table, un tavolo dotato di una specie di calotta in grado di offrire maggiore privacy negli uffici open-space.”

In realtà, l’idea non potrebbe essere più semplice. Le situazioni open-space, così come quelle di uffici, aeroporti e sale pubbliche, sono spesso caratterizzate da un alto livello di rumore e di distrazione visiva. Lo Sphere Table di Hella Jongerius può fornire un rimedio a tale situazione. Si tratta di una semisfera in plexiglas, detta anche bubble, che può essere collegata a ciascuna delle quattro gambe di un piccolo tavolo di legno. Il plexiglas attenua il rumore pur lasciando trasparire la luce attraverso la sua opacità lattiginosa. Insieme ai caldi toni del legno, la semisfera assicura un’atmosfera davvero piacevole. Lo Sphere Table unisce una luminosa sfera futuristica al familiare archetipo di un tavolo tradizionale. L’utilizzatore è invitato a trovare nella sua bubble personale un’atmosfera di lavoro concentrata.

L’idea di Sphere Table nasce quando Hella Jongerius ricevette l’incarico di ridisegnare la North Delegates Lounge della sede delle Nazioni Unite di New York. In quanto parte del piano di ristrutturazione complessivo dell’edificio, Hella Jongerius e il suo team si concentrano sia sul miglioramento dell’architettura esistente e degli arredamenti interni della lounge, che sull’integrazione di mobili studiati appositamente per tale ambiente. Lo Sphere Table è il primo di questi pezzi che ora Vitra destina alla produzione industriale.

Uma mesa de madeira comum tinha tudo para ser algo extremamente básico, não fosse a criatividade da designer holandesa Hella Jongerius. Acostumada a criar objetos e móveis que quebram com as expectativas do público ao incorporar imperfeições e misturar materiais inusitados, Hella acaba de lançar mais uma façanha: a mesa Sphere, para a marca Vitra. Apresentada na feira Orgatec 2012, a pequena peça combina um tipo de meia esfera de acrílico colorido a uma mesa simples, com o propagado intuito de proporcionar certa sensação de privacidade, esteja o móvel em espaços públicos ou no aconchego do lar.
Disponível nas cores azul, amarelo e verde, o meio globo futurista protege quem estiver a usando de ruídos e outras distrações visuais que costumam acontecer no escritório ou em casa. “Nós pensamos no trabalho em uma sala de estar sempre ocupada que exige a concentração das pessoas”, conta Jongerius. Por isso, a Sphere conta com o tal “escudo”, que pode ser acoplado em qualquer uma das quatro extremidades da mesa.
Há ainda uma questão de luminosidade no acessório. Graças à sua translucidez leitosa, a meia esfera permite que a luz do sol adentre de maneira difusa e acolhedora.

Die niederländische Designerin Hella Jongerius wurde 1963 in De Meern bei Utrecht geboren. Von 1988 bis 1993 studierte sie an der Design Academy in Eindhoven und wurde anschließend Mitglied der renommierten niederländischen Designergruppe droog design. Im Jahr 2000 gründete sie in Rotterdam ihr eigenes Büro. Unter dem Namen jongeriusLab produziert sie eine einzigartige Fülle von Textilien, Geschirr und Möbeln. Ihre Entwürfe verbinden neue technologische Errungenschaften mit der Einzigartigkeit und Bedeutung, die nur handgemachten, historischen Objekten eigen ist: „Ich versuche Produkte zu machen, die man lieben und sein ganzes Leben lang besitzen will, um sie in der eigenen Familie weiter zu reichen.“i Für die Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg entwarf Hella Jongerius das Service NYMPHENBURGER SKIZZEN sowie die Kollektion VIER JAHRESZEITEN – Spiegel, Teekanne, Weinkrug und Kerzenleuchter. Am bekanntesten sind jedoch ihre TIERSCHALEN: Jongerius wählte fünf von siebenhundert Tierfiguren aus dem Formenarchiv der Manufaktur und platzierte sie in Schalen. Die naturalistische Bemalung von Schnecke, Vogel, Nilpferd, Reh und Hase ergänzte sie jeweils mit einem zweiten Muster aus dem Dekorrepertoire von Nymphenburg – ganz gleich, ob es sich dabei ursprünglich um die Bemalung einer Suppenterrine oder das Federkleids eines Perlhuhns handelt.

La designer néerlandaise Hella Jongerius est née à De Meern près d’Utrecht en 1963. De 1988 à 1993, elle a fait ses études à l’Académie du Design à Eindhoven avant de rejoindre le célèbre collectif de designers néerlandais droog design. Elle a créé sa propre agence à Rotterdam en l’an 2000. Sous le nom de jongeriusLab, elle réalise une variété assez unique de tissus, vaisselle et meubles. Ses créations conjuguent les nouvelles découvertes technologiques à l’unicité et à la valeur propres aux objets historiques, fabriqués à la main : « J’essaie de faire des produits que l’on veut aimer et posséder toute sa vie pour les transmettre à sa propre famille. »i
Pour la Manufacture de Porcelaine de Nymphenburg, Hella Jongerius a conçu le service de vaisselle ESQUISSES DE NYMPHENBURG et la collection LES QUATRE SAISONS – miroir, théière, carafe à vin et chandelier. Mais ce sont ses PLATS ANIMALIERS qui sont les plus célèbres : Hella Jongerius a choisi cinq figurines d’animaux parmi les sept cents que comptent les archives des moules de la Manufacture, et les a disposées sur des plats. La peinture de style naturaliste de l’escargot, de l’oiseau, de l’hippopotame, du chevreuil et du lièvre est complétée à chaque fois par un second motif emprunté au répertoire des décors de Nymphenburg – qu’il s’agisse du décor prévu initialement pour une terrine de soupe ou du plumage d’une pintade.
