“CCTV Chandelier : Virtual Doppelganger Simulator” is an interactive installation that can reflect viewer’s Virtual Doppelganger. You can look objectively into yourself in a third person’s point of view.

This machine have around 12 CCTVs surrounding and hanging near viewer’s face and engineering viewer’s experience to show their Virtual Doppelganger in the connected monitors. This wearable visual system then allows the participant to see his/her own body or the surrounding environment from a third person’s perspective even when he/she is moving. Therefore, you yourself, viewer and visitor is displayed as an object in the gallery.

‘CCTV 샹들리에: 가상의 도플겡어 시뮬레이터는 착용자가 스스로를 3자의 입장에서 볼 수 있게 하는 인터렉티브 인스톨레이션이다. 머리 주위에 달린 12개의 CCTV 카메라는 다양한 각도로 착용자의 얼굴 영상을 촬영해 실시간으로 모니터에 전송한다. 이 착용 가능한 이동식 시각장치는 심지어 이동 중에도 스스로와 주위환경을 함께 녹화할 수 있다. 그리고 결국에 착용자와 경험자는 하나의 오브제가 되어 겔러리에 전시되게 된다.

디자이너인 나에게 있어 스팩타클을 거부했지만, 누구보다 더 스팩타클 했던 아이러니스트 기 드보르 Guy Debord 의 최고의 작업은 심리지리 Psychogeography 방법론이다. 기 드보르는 파리의 지도를 해체한 후 도시 지리에 대한 정신적 기록을 시도했는데, 심리지도란 과학적이고 객관적인 방법에 따른 지도 제작 술에 의존하는 것이 아니라, 도시를 무목적적으로 산책하면서 특정한 장소가 주는 감각적 사실을 기록하려는 표류, 혹은 기존의 텍스트나 이미지를 차용, 재조합하여 정서적 충격을 발생시키는 동시에 현재의 시공간에서 숨겨진 맥락을 읽어내는 우회적인 맥락을 내포한 새로운 지리학적 시도이다. 내 CCTV Chandelier는 내가 사랑하는 현대 철학자에게 바치는 헌화 즈음 되는 셈이다.

korean student of the royal college of art studying product design, hwang kim, has created the CCTV chandelier. a virtual doppelganger simulator with the intention that you can look objectively at yourself in a third person point of view. the interactive installation has 12 CCTV surrounding and hanging near the viewer’s face attached to a collar ensuring consistent point of view. this wearable visual system is connected to a series of 12 individual tvs allowing the participant to see their own body or the surrounding environment from a third person perspective. therefore, you yourself, viewer and visitor are displayed as an object in the gallery.

Designer Hwang Kim born in Seoul, South Korea in 1980, studied at Hongik University. He moved to London and gained MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art. Since 2006, the establishment of the Studio Hwang Kim, he has been working as a designer, artist, film maker, as well as an activist.

Pizzas for the people: smuggle pizza recipe DVDs to North Korea, CCTV chandelier: wander the street while self-filming with 360 Degree CCTV cameras, his works have been performed, exhibited and screened in Japan, China, Macao, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Czech, Egypt, South Africa, Barbican Center in London, Israel Museum in Jerusalem and Festival B:om in Seoul. He has been selected as Next Generation Design Leaders, Arko Young Art Frontier and Pams Choice. Invited as a jury for poster for tomorrow competition in Paris and Modern Atlanta Prize in New York.

His projects start from the premise that our current global society, with its prevailing techno-political system, faces challenges of an unprecedented scale.

Hwang is asking himself how his activity can contribute to alternative models of living and production by engaging with, commenting on, and addressing issues currently beyond the usual scope of design – political, social, technological or ecological.

Hwang is exploring the potential of creating tangible objects or interventions which impact at a social or behavioral level, by engaging with new methods of production and dissemination.

디자이너이자 작가 김황은 2006년 홍익대 금속조형디자인과를 졸업하고 안그라픽스에서 일하다 2007년 영국으로 건너가 영국 왕립예술학교 제품 디자인과에서 석사학위를 받았다. RCA의 제품 디자인과 플랫폼 13에서 공부하며, 던 앤 라비 Dunne & Raby, 옹카 쿨라 Onkar Kular 등을 통해 비평적 디자인에 영향 받았다.

360도 CCTV를 착용하고 거리를 활보하는 ‘CCTV 샹들리에’, 북한에 피자 만드는 동영상을 밀수하는 ‘모두를 위한 피자’등 대표작들은 런던 바비칸 센터, 예루살렘 이스라엘 뮤지엄, 서울 페스티발 봄을 비롯해 일본, 중국, 마카오, 네델란드, 벨기에, 스위스, 프랑스, 아일랜드, 이탈리아, 폴란드, 체코, 헝가리, 루마니아, 이집트, 남아프리카 공화국등에서 공연, 전시 및 상영 되었다. 차세대 디자인 리더 8기, AYAF 2기, 팸스 초이스 Pams Choice 로 선정되었으며, 파리 미래를 위한 포스터 Poster for Tomorrow 공모, 뉴욕 모던 아틀란타 상 Modern Atlanta Prize 에 심사의원으로 위촉 되었다.

김황의 작업은 현대 글로벌 시대의 견고한 시스템과 정치체계에 대한 미증유 未曾有 적 규모의 도전을 전제로 시작된다.

디자인은 스스로의 정의에 대해 다른 각도의 관점을 추가하고 대안을 모색하며 쟁점들을 수면 위로 끌어 올릴 수 있는가. 지형학적, 사회적, 정치적, 문화적 또는 생태학적인 디자인 행위들은 대안적 삶과 창조과정 그리고 생산과정에 대한 모델을 만들 수 있는가.

김황은 사회와 습성에 충격을 줄 새로운 유형 有形 의 물체나 무형 無形 의 방법론을 창조하기 위한 잠재적인 파종법 개발을 위해 표류한다.
