McMillan is an acknowledged early innovator of photo–sculpture. His work has been called “state of the art” by Newsweek and “a visual primer of photography” by Artweek. Artforum observed that McMillan’s work “exemplifies the conflict and enigmatic quality of realism versus reality”. The Los Angeles Times called him a “rare master of the hybrid genre.”
