Born in St Bees in 1982, Jessica moved to Scotland to study sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art in 2000, going on to do an MFA before completing a practice-led PhD in sculpture in 2013 funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Her research considers the relationship between interior and exterior spaces of the body, but looks neither inwards towards a hidden core, nor outwards from the subconscious, instead looking orthogonally across the skin to the movement of the body itself, using the surface of the body as a mode of both looking and thinking.

Moving beyond a bi-directional model, Harrison proposes a multi-directional and pervasive model of skin as a space in which body and world mingle. Working with this moving space between artist/maker and viewer, she draws on the active body in both making and interpreting sculpture to unravel imaginative touch and proprioceptive sensation in sculptural practice. In this way, Harrison re-describes the body in sculpture through the skin, offering an alternative way of thinking about the body beyond a binary tradition of inside and outside.

In the unsettling 2009 sculpture series “Handheld,” small models of furniture appear to be made out of human skin. In actuality British artist Jessica Harrison created the sculptures using casts of her own hands. The sculptures intentionally blur the division between the human body and its environment. Much of her work is anatomically-themed—we previously wrote about her grisly series of zombie-like Victorian figurines.

While the tradition of decorative ceramic figurines is filled with beautiful and serene subject, UK ceramic artist Jessica Harrison takes a decidedly darker approach. Her recent ceramic work uses this tradition as a starting point, subverting it through the addition of morbid imagery such as skulls and blood. 19th-century ladies with vacantly blithe expressions hold their own severed, gory-edged head in their lap, gaily dangle their bloody eyeballs above them, and with fleshless, skeletal face recline daintily on a chaise lounge. Such a clever miniature subversion of prim and happy porcelain figurines have a dimension of interest that the traditional harmlessly sweet figurines never possess.
Jessica Harrison graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2005 and received her master’s degree in fine sculptures.

“The things I make are a complex description of simultaneous unmaking and making, deconstructing an object or a body before putting it back together again – this could be interpreted as a violent process, but is often a very delicate and fragile one, a process of transplantation rather than dislocation. The works are an attempt to change the relationship of the object to the body, making visible the invisible, opening up something normally closed, softening a usually hard surface.”

De schotse kunstenares Jessica Harrison is zo’n type die graag de grens opzoekt. Om maar eens iets te noemen en te laten zien: ze maakt kunst van mensenhuid in de vorm van verschillende soorten meubilair. Ziet er supereng uit, zo’n hangklok die gemaakt is van een balzak. Maar het valt mee hoor, ze heeft geen echte mensenhuid gebruikt. Des te knapper is het eng realistische resultaat.

Kontroverzní modely nábytku navíc nechala vyfotografovat držené v rukou, s nimiž křesla a sedačky místy dokonale splývají. Nechutné? Možná. Pro Jessicu Harrison je ale lidská kůže fascinujícím objektem, který podle jejích slov „spojuje člověka se světem“.
Jessica se v nekonvenčním sochařství vysloveně vyžívá. V minulosti už šokovala sérií panenek ve viktoriánském stylu, které ale připomínají zombie: mají po těle krvavé skvrny nebo jim chybí hlava… Kdoví, třeba kožený nábyteček zhotovila právě pro ně.
