The female form is a hotly debated topic; it is constantly under scrutiny. Its naked state is the site of much political debate/contestation, particularly in reference to a woman’s choice on the question: to remove or grow body hair?
In July 2014, a painting was removed from a London gallery for showing a woman’s pubic hair. Though the pose was seductive, the woman was made with oil. If a painting can be deemed as ‘too pornographic and disgusting’, what about a woman in real life captured by light?
These self-portraits are a performance in contorting, balancing and/or leaping the body into poses, in order to attempt to conceal this area.

Jocelyn Allen is a UK based photographer and fresh LCC MA graduate. Her most recent series is a collection of minimal self-portraits titled ‘Covering The Carpet’. Playful yet compelling, these images simultaneously expose and conceal, exploring the double standards surrounding the female body, and in particular the media’s fascination/disgust with pubic hair.

Born in Birmingham, England in 1988.
On leaving high school I studied for a BTEC in Photography, which then led me to study for a BA in Photographic Art at the University of Wales, Newport. Initially I thought that I wanted to be a fashion photographer, but then I started to make the work that I really wanted to make – work that was more personal.
I graduated in 2010 with a self portraiture project that explored a personal phase that I went through in my second year of the course. From there a positive response (and a prize commission) gave me the confidence to produce further series, which in the making and exhibiting process have helped me overcome personal hurdles.
In December 2014 I completed an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication. During the course, my interest in video grew and for my final show I presented a video project, Your Dedication Worries Me A Little, as well as a photographic series, Covering The Carpet.
In 2013 I self-published my first book.
