Using an innovative combination of robotics, new materials, digital fabrication techniques and traditional craft skills, Joris Laarman is part of the current group of designers exploring the intersection where cutting edge technology and beauty meet. Heatwave, his graduation project from the Eindhoven Design Academy in 2003, bucked the typical sober trends typical of Dutch design. He has continued to challenge design practices ever since. In projects such as Bone Furniture, Laarman makes use of the aesthetic potential of new technologies, applying the latest scientific research and experimentation to his design practice. The Joris Laarman Lab was set up in 2004; their work can now be found in the permanent collections of the V&A in London, the MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Our lab is an experimental playground set up to study and shape the future. It tinkers with craftsmen, scientists and engineers on the many new possibilities of upcoming technology. We want to add cultural meaning to technological progress and show the beauty of how things could work. Our work is very diverse, from experimental furniture and production processes to museum installations, to architecture, film and workshops at universities around the world.

In 2011 we received 1 of the 8 innovator of the year awards by the wall street journal and since 2004 the work we’ve made with Joris Laarman Lab has been added to the permanent collections many renowned international museums like the MoMA, V&A, Centre Pompidou and recently the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

Most manufacturing of our experimental work is done in-house since we refuse to believe things can’t be done. Where possible we make translations of our experimental work in collaboration with companies like Flos, Vitra, Droog, Jaga and more.

Joris Laarman (1979) studeerde in 2003 cum laude af op de Design Academy in Eindhoven met design radiator ‘Heatwave’. Heatwave werd meteen door Droog design opgepikt en Joris Laarman trok direct internationaal de aandacht. Joris Laarman is echt een nieuwe generatie ontwerper. Hij experimenteert graag en veel met nieuwe technieken. Zo gebruikt hij computers, niet alleen om mee te ontwerpen, maar hij gebruikt hightech software ook om voor hem te ontwerpen. Ook maakt hij gebruik van nieuwe technologie zoals 3D printers. In 2006 brak Laarman definitief door met zijn beroemde Bone chair waar inmiddels meerdere versies en varianten van in productie zijn. Werk van Joris Laarman is inmiddels door vele internationale musea aangekocht. Onder andere het MOMA, het Rijks- en het Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam hebben werk van Joris Laarman in hun collectie.

Łamiąc wszelkie konwencje, stylista Joris Laarman zaprojektował grzejnik w formie kunsztownego wzoru na ścianę, który jako system modułowy pozwalałby na łączenie jego elementów w jedną formę o dowolnym rozmiarze. Rezultatem tego projektu jest grzejnik, który dzięki swojemu skomplikowanemu kształtowi posiada dużą powierzchnię oddawania ciepła. Heatwave jest grzejnikiem wodnym wykonanym ze specjalnego rodzaju betonu. Może składać się z jednego do sześciu elementów, co pozwala na dopasowanie jego wydajności cieplnej do małych jak i większych pomieszczeń.

HEATWAVE är värmekonst designat av holländaren Joris Laarman. Denna läckert skulpterade radiator hänger på din vägg som ett konstverk och drar till sig allas blickar. De behagligt lättsinniga spiralerna utgör en medveten kontrast mot det hårda betonghöljet. Heatwave finns i fyra storlekar och i färgerna svart matt och stengrå.
