Oneiric Hotel (2014) is a pop-up hotel equipped with special dream-directing equipment — an artistic reconstruction of the few successful psychophysiological sleep experiments that managed to induce and direct lucid dreams. Oneiric Hotel reenacted these experiments as bespoke experiences for the visitors, transposed from the scientific laboratory to the set of a pop-up hotel. Equipped with dream-inducing contraptions and techniques, the public was invited to take a nap in sleep capsules, entering into the dream experiments in their own way. The ‘scientific subjects’ became the designers of their own oneiric experiments.

Artist Julijonas Urbonas’s “Oneiric Hotel” installation attempts to recreate experiments to induce lucid gravitational dreams, where dreamers would fly, fall, and levitate. Participants in his sleepovers would wear headbands that measure their rapid eye movements and ankle cuffs meant to alert but not wake them.

Julijonas Urbonas is an artist, designer, researcher, engineer, lecturer, writer, Vice-Rector for Art at Vilnius Academy of Arts, and PhD student in Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art, London.

Since childhood, I have worked in amusement park development. In 2004, I became the head of an amusement park in Klaipeda, Lithuania, and ran it for three years. Having worked in this field — also as a designer and engineer — I became fascinated by what in my research I am calling ‘gravitational aesthetics.’ This experience is unavailable elsewhere, and I became intrigued by this under-developed topic. Since then the topic has been at the core of my creative practice and artistic research.

My work has been exhibited internationally and received many awards, including the Award of Distinction in Interactive Art, Prix Ars Electronica 2010, one the most prestigious awards in media arts. My projects can be found in private and museum collections such as the permanent collection of the Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM).

Julijono Urbono vedamos miego kūrybinės dirbtuvės tirs oneirinės realybės kūrybines galimybes.

Sapnai jose bus suvokiami kaip unikalus laukas kūrybiniams bandymams, poetinio tyrimo metodas ir erdvė eksponavimui. Pristačius įvairias techno- ir psichologines sapnų valdymo technikas įvadinė dirbtuvių dalis įves į eksperimentą, bandantį hipotetizuoti alternatyvius priėjimus prie sapnų režisavimo, naudojimo ir interpretavimo.

Kūrybinės dirbtuvės vyks horizontaliai. Dalyvių atsinešti čiužiniai, pagalvės, pižamos ir kiti miego reikmenys labai laukiami.

Julijonas Urbonas yra dizaineris, menininkas, rašytojas ir inžinierius. Šiuo metu jis Karališkajame meno koledže Londone sieka mokslų daktaro laipsnio (dizaino sąveikų programa). Nuo pat vaikystės dirbęs ties atrakcionų parkais – kaip architektas, dizaineris, vadybininkas – Julijonas Urbonas susižavėjo tuo, ką vadina “gravitacine estetika”. Nuo tada ši tema yra jo kūrybinio gyvenimo branduolys, tiek meninėje praktikoje, tiek moksliniuose straipsniuose. Paskutiniuoju metu jo tyrimas “subrendo” iki disertacijos. Jo darbai eksponuoti tarptautiniu mastu ir sulaukė daugybės apdovanojimų, tarp jų – prizo už ypatingus pasiekimus interaktyviajame mene, Prix Ars Electronica 2010, vieno iš prestižiškiausių medijų meno apdovanojimų. Vienas iš jo projektų įtrauktas į Karlsrūjės Meno ir medijų centro (ZKM) kolekciją. Laisvalaikiu Julijonas išradinėdamas, atlikdamas bandymus ir rašydamas tiria eksperimentinių technologijų estetiką ir skaito paskaitas šia tema. Jis gyvena ir dirba Londone ir Vilniuje.
