Okamoto, under the name bekkou, released the sound source work “hi light” from Ducth techno label X-trax in 1997 and has since worked with Dutch and English music labels. From 2004 he became enamored with Dutch design and established Kyouei Design in 2006. Kyouei Design products are now available in over 30 countries at design shops, stores and museums. He has participated in Israel’s Holon Museum opening exhibition” The State of Things” in 2010 and his product “glass tank” was included in the permanent collection at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2011. A designer whose work ranges from art, music and design, he was also selected as one of 100 artists for Contemporary Culture” NOVA” in São Paulo in 2010, and again in Rio de Janeiro in 2011.

created as an instrument, ‘pendulum sound machine’ by japanese designer kouichi okamoto subverts a record player’s rotation to make noise with 16 plate-hitting pendulums. the brass-plated pendulums rest on original phonograph record with no grooves, and as the record turns, the pendulums move and hit the plates overhead.
multiple machines can be used in tandem, creating different tones with plates of various sizes.

Японский дизайнер Kouichi Okamoto придумал прикольный ударный музыкальный инструмент Pendulum Sound Machine, использующий виртуозные способности проигрывателя пластинок. Необычный инструмент создаёт музыку благодаря 16 маятникам, бьющим по тарелочкам, и специальным пластинкам с выступами. Чтобы насладиться игрой ударного инструмента, необходимо его пристроить над проигрывателем пластинок и включить последний, не устанавливая звукосниматель на специальный виниловый диск.

Le designer réinvente un objet mythique des années 70, le tourne-disque. Il subvertit les sons attendus d’un tourne-disque pour faire apparaître les sons créés par les assiettes placées au dessus de celui-ci. Ce sont 16 tiges en métal appelées pendules, munies de petits marteaux, qui, quand elles touchent la plaque, nous permettent d’entendre de nouveaux sons. Les pendules en laiton plaqué sont reposées sur faux disque lisse. Plusieurs machines peuvent être utilisées en tandem, générant différentes tonalités selon la taille des assiettes: cet objet du quotidien sort complètement de son univers habituel pour investir celui du son, de la musique. L’assiette prend une nouvelle fonction, contribue à un autre rituel, créatif. Un objet absolument inutile mais résolument insolite.
