Kris Lemsalu (b. 1985 in Estonia, lives and works in Vienna) is a sculptor and performance artist. Her works often create irrational worlds of fantasy that are characterized by constant metamorphosis. Lemsalu’s creations are grotesque and her works almost resemble monstrous objects from a curio stand. She produces performances both alone and in cooperation with the artist group Gelatin. In 2011 Lemsalu received the BKV Prize, awarded to a young artist, in Munich.
Lemsalu studied at the Estonian Academy of Arts and at the Danmarks Designskole in Copenhagen. She is currently studying at the Akademie der Bildenden Künstes in Vienna. She has participated actively in exhibitions since 2008, but mainly outside her homeland. Her recent solo exhibitions include Kris Lemsalu with Mads Westrup at the Hinter Haus des Meeres in Vienna (2012), Being together with Edith Karlson at the Temnikova & Kasela Gallery (2012), EVIAN DESERT at the Galerie Tanja Wagner in Berlin (2012), and Top Sinner at Pro Choice in Vienna (2012). Lemsalu has also participated at the art fairs ArtForum in Helsinki (2011) and IHM Fair in Munich (2012).
