Life-Size Drawing has been re-incarnated once more, and this time, it’s in Gallery 3 at the Hayward Gallery in London. A part of “Invisible: Art about the Unseen 1957-2012,” this work will span over a space that measures 18 meters by 22 meters by 4.5 meters high, and encounter new materials such as glass, concrete, wood, and brass. With fresh surfaces to outline, LAI Chih-Sheng looks to a wider variety of writing and drawing instruments.

LAI has been reflecting upon the invisible properties of this work and how often we overlook the nuances of the reality in front of us. This installation strays from the norms of drawing, where usually something is drawn onto the surface of another object or a new subject is created that allows viewers to perceive a new world. In Life-Size Drawing, LAI draws the space of the gallery onto the original space itself! There is nothing extraneous in the work – the work is of itself. So thus, the reality has become the work, and vice versa. These two entities find themselves co-existing at the same moment.
