Lauren Gregory’s work has been described as primal — drawing from the vocabulary of early human cave paintings, she instinctually always paints with her fingers. Working quickly in oils, she records surprisingly precise images of her live portrait subjects, commemorating the tenderness of their brief human connection.

Since receiving her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Gregory’s paintings have expanded to multimedia animations; from “Poppin’ Bottles” for MOCA Los Angeles, to playdough-animated “That Girl” at the New Museum, to her animation and directorial work on Toro y Moi’s music video for the song “Rose Quartz.” Most recently, Gregory’s video work has screened at MoMA P.S.1. Gregory comes from three generations of Southern female artists. After making work in NYC for the past several years, Lauren Gregory has returned to her roots to live and work in Nashville, Tennessee.
