Work: The Decelerator Helmet offers an experimental approach to an essential subject of our globalized, fast moving society. The technical reproducible senses are consigned to an apparatus which allows the user a perception of the world in slow motion. The float of time as apparently invariant constant is broken and subjected under the users control. In the inside of the helmet the Video-signal of a camera is processed by a small computer. The slowed down images are displayed right before the users eyes via a Head-Mounted Display and simultaneously shown at a monitor on the outside. In three different modes the lapse of time can be influenced through a remote control. The Idea to decouple the personal perception from the natural timing enables the user to get aware about his own relationship to time. The helmet works as a „reflection-bubble“ in which the relations between sensory perception, environment and corporeality are disputed. The technique of the Decelerator extends the awareness of time and transforms the concept of present in a constructed, artificial state. On a different Level the helmet dramatically visualizes how slowing down under all circumstances causes a loss of actuality and as idea is inconsistent with it´s Environment. Technical enhancement as a tool to give us control about our perception, asks the question how far this influence can go, before we are all lost in how we want to see reality. The Decelerator unintentionally explores how aspects of this shift to a personalized perception could change our view of the world.

Lorenz Potthast, young german artist interested mostly in the relations between digital and analog presents unique project of the Decelerator helmet within the ArtistTalk Symposium at 6th International art – sci – tech biennale Enter 6: Biopolis in Prague, Czech Republic.

Lorenz Potthast, student of the University of the Arts in Bremen briefly explains the way that lead him to the idea of the project he is exhibiting at he festival Enter 6: Biopolis – The Decelerator Helmet.
He visualizes the development of the project, give some technical insights and show some reactions. Finally he shares some thoughts about speculative implications he extracted from the work and research on how an increasing influence of technology on our perception could change our view of the world and our global convention of reality.

Decelerator Helmet is an artistic project that offers an experimental approach to an essential subject of our globalized world. The technical reproducible senses are consigned to an apparatus which allows the user a perception of the world in slow motion. The float of time as apparently invariant constant is broken and subjected under the user’s control. The idea to decouple the personal perception from the natural timing enables the user to become aware of his own time.

In the inside of the helmet the Video-signal of a camera is processed by a small computer. The slowed down images are displayed right before the user’s eyes via a Head-Mounted Display and simultaneously shown at a monitor on the outside. In three different modes the lapse of time can be influenced through a remote control:

In the auto-mode time is slowed down automatically and re-accelerated after a defined interval. The press-mode allows the specific deceleration of time and in the scroll-mode the user can completely control the speed of the elapsing of time.

The idea to decouple the personal perception from the natural timing enables the user to become aware of his own relationship to time. The helmet works as a reflection-bubble to think about the flow of time in general and the relation between sensory perception, environment and corporality in particular.

The technique of the Decelerator extends the awareness of time and transforms the concept of present in a constructed, artificial state. On a different level the helmet dramatically visualizes how slowing down under all circumstances causes a loss of actuality and as idea is inconsistent with its environment. It raises the general question how technology will shape our senses in the future, how this shift to a personalized perception could change our view of the world and eventually will lead to an detachment of our global convention of reality.

Немецкий художник Lorenz Potthast разработал шлем, замедляющий время. Если вам кажется, что жизнь пролетает слишком быстро, а многие моменты стоят того, чтобы насладиться ими не спеша, Decelerator — ваш выбор. Шлем Decelerator выглядит как огромный зеркальный шар.
Внутри него находится дисплей, на который транслируется видео, снимаемое наружной камерой. С помощью пульта с колесом прокрутки можно ускорять или замедлять воспроизведение и таким образом регулировать скорость течения жизни в своей личной реальности. С наружной стороны шлема встроен дополнительный дисплей, отображающий, как видит мир пользователь в шлеме.

Criado por um artista alemão chamado Lorenz Potthast, o Decelerator Helmet oferece a quem o utiliza uma nova e inédita experiência: a velocidade do mundo real torna-se mais lenta, e pode ser ajustada por meio de um pequeno controle manual.
Potthast inseriu um pequeno computador e um display no capacete, além de uma tela adicional montada do lado de fora do aparelho, para permitir a quem está de fora ver o que a pessoa com o capacete está vendo.
É claro que atravessar a Avenida Paulista em pleno movimento com a ajuda deste capacete não seria uma boa ideia, mas em outras situações que permitem o auxílio de um assistente ou guia, tal dispositivo ofereceria uma incrível visão, em câmera lenta, da realidade.
Potthast não menciona nada a respeito do software que controla e auxilia a realizar as funções do aparelho, nem se possui planos para comercializá-lo no futuro.

Ralentizar el tiempo y alterar la percepción del movimiento y el mundo exterior. Es lo que promete el “Casco Desacelerador”, un curioso concepto que utiliza dispositivos electrónicos en su interior para distorsionar el entorno del usuario y presentarlo como un video en cámara lenta.

El casco, similar a una bola de aluminio gigantesca con superficie reflectante fue diseñado por el ingeniero alemán Lorenz Potthast y posee entre otros, una pantalla en su parte frontal con una minicámara que capta todo lo que sucede alrededor de la persona, transmitiendo las imágenes a un procesador interno que a su vez, muestra un video en tiempo real al usuario en formato ralentizado.

Además, el casco tiene un mando que aumenta o disminuye la velocidad de las imágenes a voluntad, pudiendo retroceder o adelantar según se requiera.

El “Casco Desacelerador” aún no tiene intenciones de ser comercializado, aunque sí es un claro ejemplo de lo que pueden llegar a ser en un futuro conceptos como Project Glass de Google, por ejemplo.

Dieser neuartige Helm des deutschen Künstlers Lorenz Potthast ist ein experimenteller Ansatz, um unserer schnelllebigen Gesellschaft zu entgehen. Dem Auge des Benutzers wird durch diesen stylischen Helm das reale Leben in Zeitlupe vermittelt. Zwolnione tempo to niezawodny sposób na podkreślenie dramaturgii, wiedzą o tym dobrze twórcy filmów akcji. Niemiecki artysta, Lorenz Potthast, postanowił jednak wykorzystać możliwości współczesnej techniki audio-wideo w nieco ambitniejszym celu.

Pojęcie czasu, którego upływ towarzyszy nam od chwili narodzin, jest tematem dość abstrakcyjnym i trudnym do uchwycenia. A gdyby tak oddać w ręce widza możliwość manipulacji czwartym wymiarem?

Użytkownik futurystycznego hełmu obserwuje świat tylko dzięki wbudowanemu wewnątrz ekranowi i słuchawkom. Domyślnie obraz z zewnętrznej kamery zostaje spowolniony na kilkadziesiąt sekund, by po tym czasie w przyspieszonym tempie “nadrobić zaległości”. Oprócz tego, za pomocą pilota można ręcznie regulować tempo odtwarzania zarejestrowanego obrazu.

Decelerator Helmet (hełm spowalniający) nie wygląda zbyt zachęcająco, i zapewne wiele osób w ogóle nie dałoby się przekonać do włożenia lustrzanej kuli na głowę – ale tylko w ten sposób można zapoznać się z koncepcją artysty.

缓动头盔是由德国艺术家Lorenz Potthast 提供的主题为“接近全球化”的活动内容之一。仪器利用“感觉再生技术”，让使用者感觉慢动作中的世界。缓动装置：把所见景象变成慢动作的头盔 头盔外部有摄像头，并利用内置的电脑处理其捕捉到的视频信号。然后将减慢的信号在头盔内部及外部的多个频幕上显示。也就是说，电脑将摄像头拍摄的视频信号处理，并慢放出来。根据使用者的体验，在这个头盔内似乎真的能够忘掉时间的流逝。

Ο Γερμανός καλλιτέχνης, Lorenz Potthast, έχει αναπτύξει μία «πειραματική» έκδοση ενός κράνους, που επιτρέπει στους χρήστες του να παρακολουθούν ό,τι συμβαίνει γύρω τους σε… αργή κίνηση.

Το αποκαλούμενο ως «Decelerator Helmet» είναι, στην ουσία, μία αντανακλαστική σφαίρα, κατασκευασμένη από αλουμίνιο, που καλύπτει πλήρως το κεφάλι του χρήστη. Έτσι, ό,τι συμβαίνει στον έξω κόσμο είναι ορατό σ’ αυτόν που το φοράει μόνο μέσω μίας εσωτερικής head-up οθόνης, η οποία είναι τοποθετημένη μπροστά από τα μάτια του χρήστη. Η οθόνη αυτή προβάλλει σε πραγματικό χρόνο το video που «συλλαμβάνεται» από μία κάμερα η οποία είναι συνδεδεμένη στο πάνω μέρος του κράνους. Οι χρήστες μπορούν να ελέγξουν την ταχύτητα του video χρησιμοποιώντας ένα ημισφαιρικό remote control,που τους επιτρέπει -σχεδόν κυριολεκτικά- να βάλουν τον κόσμο σε slow motion. Ειδικότερα, το remote προσφέρει τρεις διαφορετικούς τρόπους προβολής της «πραγματικότητας» (auto, press και scroll).Στο «auto mode», το video επιβραδύνεται αυτόματα και επιταχύνεται μετά από ένα προκαθορισμένο χρονικό διάστημα. Το «press mode», από την πλευρά του, επιτρέπει στους χρήστες να επιβραδύνουν το video σε συγκεκριμένες στιγμές, ενώ το «scroll mode» προσφέρει πλήρη έλεγχο από το χρήστη στην ταχύτητα του video. Οι εικόνες, που εμφανίζονται στο χρήστη, γίνονται επιπλέον mirroring και σε ένα monitor προσαρτημένο στο μπροστινό μέρος της συσκευής, δίνοντας μ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο και στους εξωτερικούς παρατηρητές μία ιδέα από τον τρόπο λειτουργίας του ιδιαίτερου αυτού κράνους.

Εύκολα μπορεί να αντιληφθεί κανείς ότι η χρονική «στρέβλωση» αυτή θα μπορούσε να δημιουργήσει πιθανούς κινδύνους, δεδομένου ότι οι χρήστες θα βλέπουν μπροστά τους σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις ό,τι συμβαίνει στον κόσμο με κάποια δεδομένη… καθυστέρηση. Όπως αναφέρει, όμως, ο δημιουργός του, το Decelerator Helmet αποτελεί περισσότερο μία πειραματική προσέγγιση, παρά ένα αξεσουάρ με το οποίο μπορεί κάποιος να κυκλοφορεί στο δρόμο…
