I like to observe and imagine the many ways that living things relate to each other, through touch, mating rituals and gender roles. Some of the subjects that I’m currently investigating in my work are role play, our openness to push our boundaries and perspectives through interactive tactile play. What does it feel like to be a snail mating? Can an object provide a sense of intimacy? How do our movements and actions change when taking on a fantastical role or when restricted? Are we more likely to let our guards down when things are playful?

Drawing is my most immediate route for expression. It’s unplanned, diaristic, emotionally driven. The sewn interactive objects that I create often come out of drawing through observation, reflection, and ultimately a need (be it through fantasy) for connection to other living beings.

Luiza Kurzyna is a Brooklyn-based artist working on both paper, and immersive sculptural installations. Inspired by relationships within nature, Luiza combines the many ways that living things relate to each other (for example, through touch, mating rituals or gender roles) with elements of fantasy. Growing, bulging and decaying forms give objecthood to emotion and life’s transitions. The fantastic elements are intuitive, abstract; they create a space where the emotional inside can merge with the physical outside.

Luiza completed her MFA at Brooklyn College where she was awarded the highly competitive Graduate Teaching Fellowship. Recent exhibitions include Scrawl at Artspace New Haven, Body Image at Pen and Brush in NYC, Hell, No! at St. Cecilia’s Convent in Greenpoint and Denatured at the Gershwin Hotel, NYC, where her work is now displayed on permanent loan. Her work has been published in Atlantis; Women, Art, Politics and Power and in Drawing: Space, Form and Expression.
