Merciers auf angenehme Weise komplexe Kreationen bieten viel Interpretationsspielraum, während sie die ästhetischen Codes aus Architektur und Design zerlegen und hinterfragen. Seine Skulptur-Installationen und -Strukturen entfesseln einen faszinierenden Dialog zwischen Kunst und Design des 20. Jahrhunderts und den massengefertigten Gütern der Gegenwart. Die Werke des Künstlers wurden während der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte in unzähligen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen der renommiertesten Galerien Frankreichs und in namhaften Kulturinstitutionen in Deutschland, Korea, Italien, Schottland und den USA vor einem breiten Publikum zur Schau gestellt.

Lamps, furniture, bicycles, typography, museum plinths: Mathieu Mercier’s artistic creation moves masterfully between the categories of art and everyday culture, reflecting the concepts of twentieth-century Western culture, particularly those of the modern age, in the area of conflict between architecture, design and art. The exhibition in St.Gallen’s Lokremise is Mercier’s first in a Swiss museum and primarily presents the artist’s latest works.

Mathieu Mercier (born in 1970, lives and works in Paris and Berlin) has a line of thinking about the definition of the place of the object both in the consumer industries and in the art arena. His research is conveyed by an on-going questioning of the symbolic and utilitarian functions of objects. The result shows a complex-free attitude towards everyday products and art historical references (Constructivism, geometric abstraction, Minimalism…). The artist thus proposes a radical approach freeing the object, be it unique or serial, from all acquired knowledge.
His work has been widely shown throughout Europe for the past seven years (Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, Centre Pompidou, Kunstmuseum, Bonn, Manifesta 4, etc.).
In parallel with his work as an artist he has curated a number of exhibitions. He is also a joint director of the Galerie de Multiples in Paris, which he co-founded in 2002.

La obra de Mathieu Mercier explora la relación entre objetos de consumo actuales producidos en masa y sus orígenes estéticos a principios de siglo XX en cuanto a arte y diseño.

Con frecuencia se emplea objetos cotidianos y materiales industriales para crear sus obras escultóricas, fotográficas, y obras de pared.

El trabajo de Mercier a menudo se refiere a movimientos utópicos como De Stijl y el Constructivismo Ruso. La serie de esculturas titulada Drum and Bass, recrea composiciones clásicas como Mondrain usando estanterías automontables negras y objetos cotidianos en colores primarios, tales como contenedores de plástico, cables de extensión, y carpetas fijas.
