In the wake of a critically acclaimed survey at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, in 2011, and
a solo exhibition at MoMA PS1 in New York, in 2012, Matt Connors has been garnering some serious attention. His work is hard to pin down: Paintings take on a sculpture-like quality in the way they lean on the floor or sit within multiple frames like Russian nesting dolls. Connors, 41, often takes rubbings from his studio floor or drips wet paint from one painting to another,
in the process testing the potential of abstraction. Next up for the New York– and L.A.–based artist is
a solo exhibition starting April 17 at
Canada gallery
in Manhattan.
