Work: Alias | 2013 Performative installation, Rheda Castle, 7 m x 12 m x 5 m PVC, compressor Wedged in between the six pillars of the historic building a huge object, which is made from transparent PVC, is situated. From the outside space through a compressor, air is transported in regular intervals into the inner space of the installation. Through this the surface swells up, tightens more and more while the reflections of the surrounding windows become more sharply defined. As soon as the compressor stops, air starts to silently escape and the form, almost unnoticeable, collapses. This process repeats itself every forty seconds, 24 hours, for four weeks.

Created specifically for the Orangery Schloss , Rheda, Germany, by Miriam Jonas, “Alias” is a sculpture that encompasses both the architecture in which it is set, and the history of the building.
In historic times, the Orangery Schloss was a place where exotic plants and animals were specially grown and displayed in cabinets as curiosities.
With this in mind, Alias is made of transparent PVC and is inflated in a rhythm of 40 second intervals. As air escapes before it is re-inflated, the entire structure appears as though it is alive and breathing.
