Myeong Beom Kim is from Seoul, Korea. He produces otherworldly installations and sculpture works that juxtapose man-made elements with nature to create surreal dream spaces. Utilising suspension as a common motif, his works are constantly poised in a state of ambiguous wonderment. Within his installations, living things are held inside the fragile confines of light bulbs and helium balloons replace tree foliage, literally uplifting the tree and its roots. Although this breaking down of the boundaries between artificiality and nature would generally engender a sense of unease, conveying the decline of natural phenomenon at the hands of manufactured goods, from Kim’s artistic perspective there is a rather a peaceful coexistence of these two binary opposites. It is a beautiful thing to behold.

Der Surrealismus kann ein Traum des Künstlers sein, indem wir unseren eigenen wiederfinden. Coup de projecteur aujourd’hui sur l’artiste Coréen Kim Myeongbeom, né à Séoul. Après avoir étudié la sculpture à l’Université de Séoul, il complète ses études à l’Institut des Beaux-Arts de Chicago et devient rapidement un sculpteur assez connu grâce à un style surréaliste et provocateur, en utilisant en particulier des éléments déjà présents dans la nature. L’artiste utilise abondamment l’équilibre et la suspension dans ses oeuvres, pour explorer le frontière entre la naturalité et l’artificialité. Un travail intéressant dans la grande tradition de l’art surréaliste.

Myeongbeom Kim mistura materiais simples, mas inusitados para produzir suas exibições. Definí-la como escultora soa estranho, pois é quase uma colagem. Sua obra chama atenção pelo nada e pelo todo, pois dá para sentir um conceito profundo por trás. Uma sala vazia com uma muleta chega a doer, e me faz querer sair o mais rápido daquele lugar. Uma montanha de folhas reunidas, lembra minha infância, e a vontade de me jogar ali é grande. Já a cadeira com os balões, é meu preferido. Gostaria de sentar e deixar o vento guiar, como na casa dos sonhos.

Arte é o sentimento único do artista no momento em que ele executa a obra. E nós apenas temos uma vaga interpretação do que ele gostaria de passar. Portanto sobra o sentimento. Enxergamos, sentimos e traduzimos para a nossa vida.
