She has a thing for anatomy, inherited from her parents. But instead of becoming a doctor, Olga Noronha (born in 1990) transformed this interest into a unique language that creates a dialogue between the human body and sculptural pieces of jewelry. Like in series “Orpus in Claustrum”.

The collection presents a courageous juxtaposition of crimson priestesses in soft silhouettes and sensational structured items that envelope the model like a modern-day Aelita, queen of space, from the homonymous movie of 1924 directed by Constructivist Yakov Protazanov.

Jewelry to be worn, designed to be perceived as an element that integrates with the human anatomy. Almost a fashion statement in support of those who have had to overcome trauma or fear of artificial limbs and orthopedic braces.

The concept of jewelry is extended from that of simple ornament, to now approach body design and the medicinal sciences. What is being highlighted are the results that are emerging in a historic time when the fabrics of ethics and aesthetics are being deeply woven together.

Olga Noronha was born on the first day of the 1990s in the city of Porto and began making necklaces and bracelets as early as six years old. At 13, she already knew that she wanted to study jewellery at Saint Martin’s College, setting off for London at 17 with a fine portfolio to fulfill her dream. In 2012, she completed her Master’s and is now in the second year of her doctorate at Goldsmiths College, Uinversity of London, where she also teaches. With travel between England and here, she has become familiar with UP and loved the idea of our challenge. The piece we used is part of the Corpus in Claustrum collection that was seen at the last edition of Moda Lisboa. However, Olga Noronha’s work has other facets, such as “Medically Prescribed Jewellery”, prosthetic jewellery, which is the subject of her thesis and the culmination of her love for jewellery and her father, an orthopedic surgeon.
