The digital world often forces trade-offs between two opposing preferences: speed and quality. When working with images, speed often translates to lower resolution, compressing elements to simplified shapes. During this process, it is the computer, compelled by necessity, that makes the decisions about what is taken out and what is left. If we apply this logic to existing products, like here to the sideview of an Eames chair, we see that certain aspects of the product come to the front, while others recede.

The Lo Res chair is inspired by the most famous Verner Panton chair, which was re-designed through thesemi-automatic Lo Res design process developed by United Nude.
The chair comes in plain colors, in carbon fiber gloss andmattfinishes and can be custom finished as per request. Each chair is a uniquely hand molded and hand finished fibre-composite construction, forming a light and solid object.

The Lo Res Project began a few years ago with architect Rem D Koolhaas (also United Nude’s co-founder) as Creative Director and Iddo Zimmerman as Head of Design. They 3D scan everyday objects and lower the resolution (i.e., making it more pixelated), all to create an angular, low-resolution version of it. Their idea is a way to “celebrate and recycle” design that already exists, as well as to create brand new works. So far they’ve created a shoe, a series of vodka glasses and a Lamborghini (yes, you heard me correctly).

They are currently developing their own automated and semi-automated design software. I cannot even begin to imagine all the cool things they will make in the future!
