Paul Bailey is an Irish graphic designer, educator and researcher, and Course Leader of MA Graphic Design.
Upon graduating from the MA Communication Design at Central Saint Martins, UAL (2008), Paul became Course Director, BA (Hons) Graphic Design, University of Essex (2008-10). Since joining LCC as Lead Tutor FdA/BA(Hons) Design for Graphic Communication (2010-14) Paul’s teaching has been awarded by the White Square Students Union Awards (2012), UAL Sustainability Awards and UAL Teaching Awards (2013).
Paul has been invited to present and conduct his independent research output at universities, conferences and specialised research institutes throughout the UK and Europe including the Frans Masereel Centre, Belgium and the Jan van Eyck Academie, the Netherlands. Paul’s current research, motivated by an interest in the contingent nature of meaning, surveys the acts of reading and watching within various constructs, paying particular attention to the forms of delivery and reception. This research takes many forms, one of which is an online solo-exhibition ‘Looking for/through/with/amongst/beyond/around Content’, with a new project in development for publication at Kunst Im Tunnel (KIT), Dusseldorf, Aug-Sep 2014.
In tandem with his teaching and research, Paul is also director and co-founder of the occasional design studio, We Draw Lines, working with clients such as the V&A, Central Saint Martin’s and the British Council. The studio explores an ‘occasional’ model as a experiment to understand it’s viability and furthermore it’s relevance to wider creative practice.
Paul is external examiner for MA Social Practice And the Creative Environment (SPACE), Limerick School of Art & Design (LSAD), Ireland (2014), assessor for the International Society of Typographic Designers (2011-), a member of the Design Displacement Group (2013-2034) and the recently established graphic design educators network, Formative (2014-).
