Petros Chrisostomou photographs small-scale, ordinary, ephemeral objects in architectural models that he constructs himself, and then dramatically arranges, often employing lighting and staging conventions of the theatre. With the alteration of scale and reversal of the relation between object and environment, between imaginary and real space, his photographs challenge the viewer’s visual certainties. The illusionary effect he achieves highlights the artist’s playful approach, which fluctuates between mimicry of the real world and construction of a surreallistic reality. In his photographs, the exuberant assemblage of objects in luxurious interiors – resembling wreckage from some disaster -create paradoxical still lifes that parody the traditional memento mori style of the genre. In his works Rococo bluff I and Rococo bluff 2, the objects he creates out of balloons, chewing gum, fabric and glasses are freed of their ordinary use and become dynamic protagonists. Similarly, the details of the rococo set consist of everyday objects, functioning as contemporary cultural signifiers. Christosomou’s photographs become the field for mixing the high- and the low-brow, mass culture and genre painting, the luxurious and the expendable, as indications of social class distinctions. At the same time, the relations between the real and the imaginary in his oeuvre are a commentary on the mediated images of contemporary mass media that distort the natural and immediate dimension of our relation to reality, determining, among other things, the conditions for viewing and receiving art. Petros Chrisostomou is a New York-based British artist and photographer who currently causes a stir in the world of artists and non professionals with his larg-scale installations. His work with small-scale, ordinary objects shows familiar and ephemeral things of the everyday life in an unusual, tiny context. In his photographs they seem to increase and occupy the space they’re in. The alteration of scale reversal the relation between object and environment, challenging the viewer’s visual certainties. Petros’ photographs, often employ lighting and staging conventions of the theatre, transferring the audience in the mind of the enchanted world of Alice in Wonderland. His constructions of a surrealistic reality create a world in between imaginary and real space, a twilight between the trivial and the extraordinary.

Petros Chrisostomou Graduated from Royal Academy Schools in 2008 with MA Fine Art
“In summary, I feel that my work is about extremes and I continue to pursue this. Works like “Banandosh” and “Hero” from the 18 Fortis Green series (an interpretation of my childhood home from memory) stand as totems to the romantic ideas of hope and aspiration, yet maintain a sense of grounding on various different obvious and less obvious ways. Whilst more recent works like “Slut”, “Lips” and “Orgy”, become parody’s of themselves, and poke fun at the art world and the idea of art as a commodity. The free -standing sculptures add another dimension to the dialogue between fact and fiction.”

The way in which Petros Chrisostomou presents his sculptural installations, one would think that his shoe design art pieces are larger-than-life statues that reach as high as the ceiling.
In order to get this effect and still maintain the extreme realism and detail that he does in his work, the artist actually constructs small-scale settings that make the items within them seem incredibly huge. Most viewers analyzing the photos won’t be looking at the plain white rooms in the backdrop, instead they will be impressed with the sheer scale of what appear to be life-like sculptures.
Petros Chrisostomou plays a game with our minds through photography, turning his shoe design art installations into optical illusions.
