Work: When aircraft Shelter 610 opens its ruthless doors, a monstrous black behemoth slowly comes driving out. The object revives the mysterious atmosphere of the Cold War and its accompanying terrifying weaponry. At an almost excruciatingly slow pace, the artwork uses its caterpillar tracks to cross the seemingly infinite runway. Due to this brutal object’s constantly changing position in the serene landscape, it allows the visitor to experience the area and the history of the military airbase in new ways.

At the same time, the artwork functions as a working environment for researchers. Their temporary stay creates opportunities for innovative research programs that otherwise would be impossible. For example, inside the object, students of the Technical University Delft (Aerospace / CleanEra) will develop a program for the innovative flying of the 21st century: “no noise, no carbon, just fly”. The old runway is the perfect test site for state of the art aviation experiments.

The mobile sculpture and shelter 610 are perfect spaces for research, experiment and innovation for groups coming from various disciplines. The unconventional combination of nature and Cold War history offers an exciting environment for the development of knowledge about nature, technology and aviation.

Architecture firms Rietveld Landscape and Studio Frank Havermans have unveiled a flightless craft for researchers at a former Cold War airbase near Utrecht.
Secret Operation 610 is an art installation comprising a 4.5 metre-tall black vehicle designed to be used as a mobile workspace for researchers. It has two large wing-shaped legs that exit a diamond-shaped cockpit and have caterpillar tracks on the feet to move around.

Essa máquina de guerra (que até lembra um Space Invaders se olhada de frente) só é usada na guerra contra a falta de conhecimento. Apesar de toda sua aparência ser projetada para ser parecida com uma feroz arma de batalha e ainda estar estacionada em uma base aérea militar desativada, a Secret Operation 610 nada mais é do que uma sala de aula móvel.

A empresa Rietveld Landscape, de Amsterdam, teve a missão de desenvolver o projeto chamado Secret Operation 610 a pedidos dos pacifistas do Tratado da Fundação Utretcht, da província de Utretcht em conjunto com a fundação SKOR (Foundation for Art and Public Domain). O resultado foi essa escultura móvel e futurista que nunca se sairia bem em uma guerra de verdade, a começar pelo seu sistema de mobilidade que seria muito limitado.

A intenção do projeto foi muito boa e alunos da Universidade de Tecnologia de Delft estão usando o laboratório para trabalhar no desenvolvimento de um programa para voos livre de carbono. Segundo seus projetistas “seu interior foi concebido de uma forma que as pessoas possam trabalhar aqui de diferentes maneiras”. Para fechar, há dois assentos extras que ficam na ponta da sala e garantem um pouco mais de relaxamento.

Когда эта таинственная конструкция выезжает из ангара бывшей авиабазы Soesterberg в Нидерландах, перед нами появляется нечто черное и угловатое, напоминающее самолет стелс, скрещенный с залом ожидания аэропорта. Такое сочетание дизнайнерского искусства и мобильной архитектуры получило название Secret Operation 610. Это странное творение создавалось кооперацией нескольких дизайнерских студий в течение 18 лет. В отличии от истребителей F-15, которые раньше ночевали в военном ангаре бывшей натовской базы, Secret Operation 610 не умеет летать — это всего лишь самоходная гусеничная машина. Что она ещё умеет? Создавать атмосферу страха и напряженнности времен холодной войны в радиусе 4 км, катая своих пассажиров в количестве 12 человек по взлетно-посадочной полосе бывшего аэродрома.

Независимо от того, чем на самом деле является Secret Operation 610 — зданием, транспортным средством или дизайнерской скульптурой, в настоящее время эта «машина смерти» используется для обучения студентов из Делфтского университета технологий.

Un ex-aérodrome militaire d’Utrecht vient d’ouvrir les portes de l’un de ses hangars top-secret construits à la fin des années 1970. A l’intérieur, le studio Rietveld Landscape et Frank Havermans ont dissimulé aux yeux du public un vaisseau de transport qui n’aurait pas vu le jour depuis 1986, l’époque des expérimentations aéronautiques furtives des deux côtés de l’Atlantique. En vérité, l’engin nommé Secret Operation 610 n’a que quelques semaines d’existence, il a été créé de toutes pièces (bois et aluminium peint en noir mat) dans le cadre d’une installation artistique réhabilitant le temps d’un voyage dans le temps la piste de la RNAF de Soesterberg, en meublant un ex-hangar de F-15 Eagle (le McDonnel Douglas de référence).

Haut de 4.5 m, long de 8 m et large de 11 m, l’engin peut accueillir dix personnes dans son cockpit vitré. Il se déplace grâce à une paire de chenilles motorisées aux extrémités de ses « pattes », une troisième extension assure sa stabilité au sol. Mais le Secret Operation ne vole pas.

De mobiele sculptuur en de vliegtuigbunker Shelter 610, zijn voor allerlei verschillende disciplines een plek voor experimenten en innovatie. De ongebruikelijke combinatie van natuur en Koude Oorlogsgeschiedenis biedt een spannende omgeving voor het ontwikkelen van kennis over natuur, technologie en luchtvaart.

Tijdelijk gebruik
Op de vroegere militaire vliegbasis in Soesterberg is het sculptuur in het geheim ontworpen door RAAAF, Studio Frank Havermans en Koos Schaart. De ontwerpers willen met hun mobiele sculptuur laten zien is hoe er met leegstaand erfgoed omgegaan kan worden. Er staat zoveel overheidserfgoed leeg waar niets mee gebeurt. Herbestemmen is naar hun mening te traag en te duur. Een betere optie is om op een innovatieve manier tijdelijk gebruik maken van dit soort cultuurhistorische monumenten.

Zwart monster
Als met veel lawaai de meedogenloze deuren van vliegtuigbunker Shelter 610 opengaan, rijdt een monsterlijk zwart gevaarte traag naar buiten. Het object doet de geheimzinnige sfeer van de koude oorlog en het angstaanjagend oorlogstuig herleven. Het kunstwerk beweegt zich op rupsbanden in een tergend langzaam tempo over het asfalt van de eindeloze startbaan. Door de steeds wisselende positie van dit brute object in het verstilde natuurlandschap laat het de bezoeker op een andere manier naar de omgeving en de historie van de militaire vliegbasis kijken.

Gebruik
Het kunstwerk is tegelijk een gebruiksruimte voor onderzoekers. Het tijdelijk verblijf schept mogelijkheden voor innovatieve onderzoeksprogramma’s die normaal onmogelijk zouden zijn. Studenten van de TU Delft (Aerospace / CleanEra) ontwikkelen in het object bijvoorbeeld een programma voor het innovatieve vliegen van de 21e eeuw: “no noise, no carbon, just fly”. De oude startbaan is de testplek voor state of the art vliegexperimenten.

RAAAF [Rietveld Architecture-Art-Affordances] opereert op het snijvlak van architectuur, kunst en wetenschap. De studio startte in 2006. RAAAF maakt locatiespecifiek werk en ontwikkelde de ontwerpbenadering van ‘strategische interventies’ die voortkomt uit de respectievelijke achtergronden van de bureaupartners: Prix de Rome Architectuur-winnaar Ronald Rietveld en filosoof Erik Rietveld. Het vaste ontwerpteam bestaat naast hen uit architect Arna Mackic. Ontwerpend onderzoek door wisselende multidisciplinaire ontwerpteams met wetenschappers en andere specialisten leidt tot heldere concepten, krachtige verbeelding en radicale vernieuwing. Een sprekend voorbeeld hiervan is Vacant NL, de Nederlandse inzending voor de Architectuurbiënnale van Venetië 2010, waarbij de potentie van 10.000 leegstaande overheidsgebouwen werd verbeeld en die nu centraal staat in het debat over innovatief hergebruik.

in collaboration with studio frank havermans, dutch designers rietveld landscape reveal ‘secret operation 610’ for vrede van utrecht 2013 (the peace of utrecht festival). emerging from the shelter of a former F15 hanger at cold war airbase soesterberg, the mobile design creeps along the apparently unending airstrip. the lethargic pace of the caterpillar wheels gives viewers a long period of contemplation of the elevated vessel and its historical context at the military airbase. its form resembles aircraft but is flightless. what appear to be wings turn into two long arms that descend to the ground and end in traditional military treads to supported the structure. a third supports extends over the back end of the capsule. the general aesthetic of the sculptural object resembles something from a science fiction movie. however, it is a functional work that serves as a research station. one of the groups occupying the space is cleanera: technical university (TU) delft aerospace engineering students who are developing the ‘no noise, no carbon, just fly’ technologies for the future of flight.
