On October 9th, 1992, a meteorite broke up over the United States and hit a parked car in Peekskill, New York. Since then that car is known as the Peekskill Meteorite Car and was exhibited all over the world. Ron van der Ende, a Dutch artist, took that car as the inspiration for his bas relief made with reclaimed timber.

Ron van der Ende is a sculptor living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He was born in Delft, the Netherlands in 1965 and grew up as the son of a building contractor in the small village of Maasdijk in an area called ‘het Westland’, which is known for being covered in glass houses. After attending art school in Rotterdam Van der Ende explored various techniques and materials until in 1996 he decided to focus on the use of salvaged wood exclusively.
“In 2000 I came up with a way to construct wall mounted bas-reliefs from salvaged wood. The original color and texture of the wood is utilized to form a gripping and realistic mosaic, a realism further enhanced by the perspective built into the relief. By now I have built over a hundred of these works with themes ranging from cars and architecture to tree stumps and even a cut of meat. I am interested in artifacts that have once inspired enthusiasm but that we have come to look upon with indifference. I want to reexamine these objects thoroughly and up close. I want to hold them to the light and see how their meaning has changed.
