Work: This installation is controlled and monitored by the use of hand-made cigars. Because each cigar has its own strength due to the natural and traditional way of making, it means they all have their own fire rate rendering the installation unpredictable as it responds to an unnatural rhythm caused by these fire rates. The artwork is composed of 4 tuners each control a recorder by means of pistons containing the hand rolled cigars. There are 4 different recorders: a bass flute, alto, tenor, and a soprano. The pistons with the cigars and the recorders are both controlled by 2 abstract lungs. This sound-art burning cigar piece can be seen as a tribute to the former tobacco industry of Eindhoven city and the sound composition is a requiem for its thousands of workers and craftsmen. Statement: Born in 1966, Ronald van der Meijs lives and works in Amsterdam. He studied architectural design and graduated cum laude in 1993 at the Academy of Arts St. Joost in Breda, Netherlands. From 1993 he had his own practice and focused primarily on architectural design and concepts. He received architectural stipends and was teacher spatial design at the Academy of Arts St. Joost for 3 years. Since 2001 his work shifted to autonomous work in which architecture and sound is still a recurring theme. He had exhibitions in various museums, galleries, and biennials in the Netherlands and abroad. Such as NAI – Rotterdam, Central Museum Utrecht, Dordrechts Museum, Gorinchem Museum in the Netherlands, Martinez gallery – New York, SIM House – Reykjavik, Verbeke Art Foundation – Belgium, Fabbrica Europa 2012 – Florence and Centro de Arte Complutense – Madrid. He received art commissions of the Dutch Government and received several grands of the Mondriaan Fund.

“Play it one more time for me La Ville Fumée ‘
A sound-art installation that works on hand made cigars and refers to the history of Eindhoven city, when it was one of the largest cigar-producing cities of Europe. At that time the city was also called ‘La Ville Fumée’.

The installation is in many ways about nature versus culture. The technique used here has an almost machine like character, that is controlled and monitored by a natural and traditional item: the hand made cigar. Because each cigar has its own strength by the natural and traditional way of making, they all have their own fire rate. It is precisely this fact that the installation is not working in a predictable way but rather relates to a more or less natural rhythm.
The installation has 4 tuners each control a recorder by means of pistons containing the hand-rolled cigars. There are 4 different recorders: a bass flute, alto, tenor, and a soprano. Na een artist in residence periode is een nieuw werk tot stand gekomen. Een solo presentatie met een sound-art installatie die refereert aan de geschiedenis van Eindhoven in een tijd dat het een van de grootste sigaren producerende steden van Europa was. De installatie gaat in allerlei opzichten over natuur – cultuur.
Het is een installatie die men in diverse lagen van betekenis kan lezen. Er zijn letterlijke en metaforische lagen in het werk te ontdekken. Het werk is in feite een machine die wordt aangestuurd en gecontroleerd door een natuurlijk gegeven; de hand gedraaide sigaar. Het feit dat er gebruik wordt gemaakt van hand gedraaide sigaren is een belangrijk gegeven binnen dit werk. Omdat iedere sigaar een eigen vastheid heeft door de natuurlijke en ambachtelijke manier van maken, heeft ieder sigaar ook een eigen brandsnelheid. Juist dit gegeven maakt dat de installatie niet op een voorspelbare manier zal werken maar juist is overgeleverd aan een min of meer natuurlijke ritmiek.
Men kan de installatie lezen als een geluid genererende machine die wordt aangestuurd door opgerolde tabaksbladeren. De installatie heeft 4 mechanieken die ieder een blokfluit aansturen door middel van zuigers met daarin de hand gedraaide sigaren.

Er is gekozen voor 4 verschillende fluiten: een basfluit, een tenor, sopraan en een altblokfluit. Dit zijn de meest voorkomende fluiten.
Zowel de fluiten als de zuigers met de sigaren worden door 2 abstracte longen aangestuurd. Alles in deze installatie heeft te maken met blazen en zuigen.
Het genereren van geluid door het opbranden van sigaren kan men in deze solo tentoonstelling tevens beschouwen als een ode aan de vroegere tabaks industrie van Eindhoven en haar duizenden arbeiders en ambachtslieden. Tijdens ieder tentoonstellingsdag wordt de installatie eenmaal gevuld met nieuwe sigaren en wordt als zodanig gedemonstreerd.

Nacido en 1966 en Tilburg , vive y trabaja en Amsterdam. Estudió diseño arquitectónico y se graduó con honores en 1993 en la Academia de Arte de St. Joost / Avans Hogeschool Breda. Desde 1993 empezó a trabajar por su cuenta y se centró principalmente en la arquitectura, el diseño de interiores y de mobiliario. Recibió varias becas de arquitectura del gobierno, exponiendo sus obras en museos y galerías como el NAI en Rotterdam, Museo Central de Utrecht en los Países Bajos y la galería de Martínez en Nueva York.

Construye esculturas e instalaciones específicas para cada contexto que cuestionan el cómo las personas se relacionan con el medio ambiente a través de la tecnología, ya sea ésta alta tecnología o métodos de construcción más propios del ámbito rural.

“Es fascinante ver como tratamos de controlar nuestras vidas y hasta la propia naturaleza, usando y dependiendo totalmente de la tecnología”.
Los procesos naturales son parte y objeto de muchas de las obras de Roland. Está interesado en cómo la naturaleza y los seres humanos se organizan: la consolidación del crecimiento y la decadencia, y los procesos de adaptación evolutiva en un entorno cambiante. En particular, le interesa cómo las personas llegan al desarrollo de la tecnología en respuesta a la naturaleza y los elementos.

A instalação de som – feita pelo artista holandês Ronald Van der Meijs – intitulado ‘play it one more time for me la ville fumée’ – é controlada e monitorada por charutos manuais. Porque cada charuto tem a sua própria força, devido à forma natural e tradicional de fazer, tornando a instalação imprevisível, como ela responde a um ritmo natural causado por estas taxas de “chamas”.

A obra de arte incomum é composta por 4 sintonizadores, cada um com um registador de controle por meio de êmbolos contendo os charutos enrolados à mão. Existem quatro registadores diferentes: uma flauta baixa, alta, tenor e uma soprano.
