Barrisol is the world leading manufacturer of suspended ceilings. This material lights up and gives the impression that it is at one with the building where it is installed also offers an element of acoustic attenuation.

This product is mainly used for classical interiors, the smooth and horizontal canvas producing an alternative light that is easy to install other suspended ceiling systems.

Studying in depth the stretching properties of the material, we found that it had the ability to take the form of minimal surfaces, as they are called in the field of mathematics. This means that even if the canvas is flat, when it is cut and assembled with high accuracy, it allows for creation of volumetric three-dimensional shapes.

The aim of this project is to illustrate the inherent value of this material using innovative manufacturing technologies, such as digital cutting or digitally controlled three-dimensional folding machines, for a high level of accuracy on an architectural scale.

Thanks to the stretching properties of the material studied in the first version of the design, we get superb, illuminated large objects that illuminate and enhance the acoustic qualities of the spaces they inhabit. The Barrisol stretched canvas and 3 dimensional tubular frame form a coherent entity.

A single stand was created to present this lamp at the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium, which was also built by Barrisol for the purpose of illustrating the other possible applications of this materials. The project at large examines various properties of the materials used for the Barrisol stretched canvas such as its reflection, acoustic attenuation and exceptional translucency.

Ross Lovegrove created an installation of large volume, 3D lights within a distinctive hexagontiled reflective pavilion, made from materials and technology by the innovative French company, Barrisol. Both the pavilion and lighting collection is currently on view at Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium until the 26th of October.

The installation includes four large pieces that balance aesthetic form with subtle lighting function. Three pieces of the collection are forms of an ‘infinite loop’, they are highly volumetic, threedimensional lights, created from a perfect synergy between the stretch material, LED lighting and an aluminium framework. The final piece, Manta, forms a rhomboid, which allows for many different large modular arrangements. In this light, Barrisol foils with different intensities of stretch provide highly layered acoustic dampening and uniform lighting.

Ross Lovegrove is a designer and visionary who’s work is considered to be at the very apex of stimulating a profound change in the physicality of our three dimensional world.

Inspired by the logic and beauty of nature his design possess a trinity between technology, materials science and intelligent organic form, creating what many industrial leaders see as the new aesthetic expression for the 21st Century. There is always embedded a deeply human and resourceful approach in his designs, which project an optimism, and innovative vitality in everything he touches from cameras to cars to trains, aviation and architecture.

Born 1958 in Cardiff, Wales. Graduated from Manchester Polytechnic with 1st Class BA Hons Industrial design in 1980. Master of Design of Royal College of Art, London in 1983.

In the early 80’s worked as a designer for Frog Design in West Germany on projects such as Walkmans for Sony, Computers for Apple Computers, later moved to Paris as consultant to Knoll International;. Being author of the highly successful Alessandri Office System.

Invited to join the Atelier de Nimes along with Jean Nouvel and Phillipe Stark, consulting to amongst others Cacharel, Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Dupont.

Returning to London in 1986 he has completed projects for amongst others Airbus Industries, Kartell, Ceccotti, Cappellini, Idee, Moroso, Luceplan, Driade, Peugeot, Apple Computers, Issey Miyake, Vitra, Motorola, Biomega, LvMH, Yamagiwa Corporation, Tag Heuer, Hackman, Alias, Herman Miller, Artemide, Japan Airlines and Tokyo Ito Architects in Japan.

Winner of numerous international awards his work has been extensively published and exhibited internationally including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum NY, Axis Centre Japan, Pompidou Centre, Paris and the Design Museum, London, when in 1993 he curated the first permanent collection. His work is held in permanent collections of various design museums around the world including Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA), Design Museum in London and Vitra Design Museum Weil Am Rhein, Basel, CH.
