In Samuel Salcedo art irony mixes with the great sympathy to the humans. His realistically made sculptures show ridiculous, funny and some times touching heroes often show nuked. Despite of the small scale, Samuel’s works truly and deeply show all the complex of the human loneliness and confusion.
Another vector of Samuel’s art is giant irreal heads with the distorted features that might show offense. In the age of social media, when each of us could create his own fake image, the artist uncovers shortcomings and weaknesses of an ordinary people showing them in an unusual way. Samuel explains: “I like to play with the image of the mask, to show the look that hide something or on the other hand show several emotions at the same time… My art is a reflection of ourselves, how we see each other and ourselves”.

Samuel Salcedo was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1975. He studied at the College of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and at the Manchester Metropolitan University. He graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona in 1998. He has exhibited in various venues over the past decde throughout Spain, including Galeria Rose Selavy, Barcelona (1998); 3 punts Galeria, Barcelona (2001, 2003, 2007); Galeria Clave, Murcia (2002); Galeria Art72, Lleida (2005); Galeria Jose Lorenzo, Santiago de Compostela (2006) and Besharat Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia (2008, 2010, 2011). “Samuel Salcedo seems to have understood that the moment in which culture is born, reality is covered like a satin wrapper and man forgets how close he is to passion, violence and submitting to dark and powerful instincts. Salcedo’s work helps us to approach the more absurd, cruel and crude side of human existence. Eliminating the contextual elements from his paintings and sculptures, that is to say, abstracting the subjects from their cultural surroundings, Salcedo illuminates all of our best-kept secrets. When we lower our defenses and allow ourselves to follow the rules of desire, when we begin to forget what we have learned, when norms and behavioral conditioning vanish and we decide to undress and start skipping on top of an upturned basin – in that moment Salcedo lights a lamp for us which illuminates everything clearly. In this way we see how the ironic, the crude, the absurd and the often disagreeable meet in his work, in a kind of private and intimate chronicle.”
