Empire of the Clouds is a dramatic futuristic representation of aviation achievements, throughout the past, present and future. Inspired by the true design innovation and achievement from machines of flight throughout the entirety of the concept. Focusing on model making to gain a unique perspective and develop an understanding of the overwhelming human drive, almost obsession, to achieve what we cannot do naturally, to fly.

Passionate about research Buchanan has a meticulous attitude towards uncovering all elements in a concept. In this collection it enabled a distinctive perspective to a large subject, creating a concept based around model making and accessibility of a globally collective dream.

Through innovative use of materials and conceptual pattern cutting, Buchanan has achieved striking shapes and confident structural lines, reflecting the impressive machines that inspired. Fascination with the utterly indescribable, near magical, machines that are so integrated, ordinary and standardised, motivated a need to highlight what a truly extraordinary achievement flight, both modern and historical actually is.

The simple fact that more is known about space and our surrounding atmosphere than the depths of our own oceans, demonstrates so clearly what a shared and magnificent dream flight has, and always will be.

From the propeller to supersonic jets, the history of aviation design is brimming with evolutions, special materials and increasingly aerodynamic shapes, able to cut through the air and dominate the skies. What does this have to do with fashion collection “Empire of the Clouds” by Sarah Buchanan? For the general concept, the fashion designer was inspired by the development in the design of air vehicles throughout history, and to that all too human obsession that has always accompanied us: to conquer the force of gravity and move freely.

In her silhouettes we can distinguish fabrics that have been deconstructed into fragments and strips that envelope and are suspended like futuristic propellers around the body, thanks to the innovative use of materials and conceptual cuts and structures.

In the flock of flying machines Sarah was inspired by to find the concepts for her experimental garments, we discover her fascination with the indescribable and magical, that underlines the essence of this human adventure still underway, especially in the dimension of a collective dream.
