SÉBASTIEN PRESCHOUX

This vision from artist and designer Sebastien Preschoux incorporates thread as a medium for a series of intriguing string installations. With this project, Preschoux makes use of the ability to set up in a wide variety of settings, adding an individual dynamic to each installation. Carefully mixing a given environment with natural elements of lighting and shading, each effort is derived in spontaneity with minimal amounts of planning made beforehand. Handcrafting each display, the artist makes no exceptions to his rule of conceptualizing each work without the use of any computers.

parisian artist and designer sébastian preschoux has developed several new thread sculptures and ink drawings, sharing with
designboom a little about his process, methods and preferred techniques.

geometric installations by the artist are created with no particular graphic guide to begin with. instead, preschoux develops his thread
sculptures spontaneously, starting with a center point in which the artist affixes a gathering of string, leading out to various endpoints
from this epicenter. from this process, unique sweeping and intricate shapes are actualized in the environment. the artist’s string installations
are made permanent by the images made by photographer friend ludovic le couster. the photos are captured with strategic lighting placed
in such a way that the stretched pieces of thread become vibrant stills.

‘my work is based on the ‘not use of the machine’ for the realization of all works, whether it is drawings or installations. I can’t see the (artistic)
interest to conceptualize a work on a computer (which attends in the process of creation and interferes), and thus eventually be only the performer
of this assisted production. it is so pleasant to have the surprise of the result, to feel that things can escape you and take an unexpected direction.
by this approach I wish to preserve the use of my hands as tool of creation and not as object serving to type touches and mouse. the important
is to have a tactile relationship with the material, to be able to dread the qualities and the defects’.
