Sonice Development invents and builds machines and robotic installations. They form a coherent beauty of imperfection, by linking both worlds – the digital and the material. The group creates architecture-related pieces as live-installations. Most of their designs derive from research, observation and their desire to discover and understand. The group emerged from the Facadeprinter-project that was started by Michael Haas and Martin Fussenegger during their product design studies at the “University for Media Art and Design Karlsruhe”. The invention of a new tool for urban communication was the goal of this project. In 2008, engineer Julian Adenauer joined the team. Together they developed the second version of the printer that has been shown on many media-art-festivals around Europe as tool of personal empowerment. Today Julian Adenauer and Michael Haas are the core of the group who are supported by a diverse pool of friends and collaborators of engineers, artists and programmers. Sonice Development’s work is about the appropriate use of physical and digital materials, when striving for visions of an alternative esthetic technology. They invent their instruments of creation and learn them to play to develop their specific characteristics.
Work: „Emerging Colorspace“ is a robotic drawing installation. A machine with the ability to move on vertical surfaces autonomously applies paint to the wall using a marker. Thousands of lines painted with different colors form an increasingly dense colorspace that emerges during the more than 200 exhibiton hours. The wandering behaviour of the machine follows simple algorithmic rules with random elements. “Emerging Colorspace” is constantly changing and never looks the same on two different days.

Sonice Development is Julian Adenauer (left) and Michael Haas (right) – a Berlin based duo of artists and inventors. Our work is focused on drawing-machines and interactive installations that transcend the borders between the digital and the physical, technology and art, ideas and materiality.
We push boundaries to create new experiences.
We challenge the traditional to tell new stories.
We inspire.
We build machines.

thousands of painted lines made up of different tones and hues form an increasingly dense landscape of chroma in ‘emerging colorspace’: a robotic drawing installation by german studio sonice development. presented during the ‘red never follows’ exhibition at saatchi gallery london, the autonomously wandering machine scales up and down on vertical surfaces, applying paint to the wall using a marker. following simple algorithmic rules with random elements of spontaneity, the device generates a continuously changing facade that infinitely transforms the interior fabric of the gallery space.
