SpY is an artist from Madrid. His first actions appeared in the middle eighties. Shortly after, already a national reference as a graffiti artist, he started to work with other forms of artistic communication in the street: large posters, modified billboards, interventions that were experimental in the first nineties.
His work consists in the playful reappropiation of urban elements, that he replicates or transforms and then installs in the street. All his production stems from the observation of the urban environmnet, a sense sharpened by years of experience as a graffiti artist. A careful attention for the context of each piece and a constructive and non-invasive attitude unmistakably characterize his actions.
SpY’s pieces want to be a break in the automat-like inertia of the urban dweller. Bits of thought that hide in a corner for whoever wants to let himself be surprised. Full of both irony and a positive sense of humor, they appear to inspire a smile, a thought, to help a conscience a little bit more lucid.

For the past 20 years, Spanish street artist SpY has created graffiti and art installations in the urban environment. This year in particular, SpY was busy creating urban works of art in Spain, Switzerland, France, Italy, and Germany. His work is meant to have equal parts of irony and humor to surprise viewers, make them smile, and incite reflection.

SpY integrante del desaparecido grupo de streetart Mambo Kings, gran conocido en la escena Madrileña, ha ganado mucha notoriedad por sus últimas acciones, hasta el punto de que el rapero de Los Angeles, Kany West, recomendara su obra en su blog personal. El mes pasado el diario “El País” le dedicaba un articulo-entrevista a dos páginas en su suplemento EP3 llamandolo “el Bansky español”.
“SpY es un artista madrileño. Sus primeras actuaciones se remontan a mediados de los ochenta. Poco después, ya consagrado como referencia en la escena del graffiti, comenzó a trabajar con otras formas de comunicación artística en la calle: carteles gigantes, publicidades modificadas, intervenciones que a principio de los noventa resultaban experimentales.
Su trabajo consiste en la reapropiación de elementos urbanos con una voluntad de juego, elementos que transforma o replica e instala en la calle. Toda su producción nace de la observación del entorno urbano, un sentido agudizado por años de experiencia como artista de graffiti. La cuidadosa atención al contexto de cada pieza y una actitud constructiva y no invasiva caracterizan inconfundiblemente sus actuaciones.
Las obras de SpY quieren ser un paréntesis en la inercia autómata del urbanita. Son pellizcos de intención que se esconden en una esquina para quien se quiera dejar sorprender. Cargados a partes iguales de ironía y un humor positivo, aparecen para contagiar una sonrisa, incitar una reflexión, favorecer una conciencia un poco más despierta.”

Après la chine, l’angleterre, c’est au tour de l’Espagne d’être à l’honneur sur 2-high. Car c’est à Madrid qu’opère cet artiste, qui se fait appelé Spy. Et si les espions sont d’habitude discret, lui a décidé d’être bien voyant en s’attaquant au éléments urbains de la capitale Hispanique.C’est du Street Art, avec un grand A. En plus d’être visible et accessible à tous, le Street Art fait revivre le mobilier urbain, celui-là même qu’on ne regarde plus après moultes passages, lui donnant une nouvelle dimension, une nouvelle vie.

Madrileno di origine, lo street artist che si firma Spy rompe gli schemi dell’arte di strada tradizionale sfociando in uno stile che è più comunicazione e interazione con la realtà urbana e con i suoi abitanti. Le sue opere sembrano scaturire dall’osservazione e dalla reinterpretazione degli spazi cittadini e questo processo di rielaborazione viene effettuato attraverso una buona dose di ironia e umorismo, che gli consentono di affrontare con leggerezza temi importanti e di generare spunti di riflessione. E si sa come l’arte, coi suoi toni timidi e carezzevoli, riesca ad instillare idee e suggestioni.
