Stefan Benchoam is an artist and exhibition maker with a double B.A. Major in Fine Arts and Telecommunications from Indiana Univeristy (USA).
His work as an artist is multifaceted, with at least two distinctive lines of research: one which is developed in the public realm through actions and interventions, and another one which uses informality to question the myths of authenticity, of the artist, and of art itself, which he hopes will help blur the lines of work of both the artist and the curator.
In 2011, Benchoam had solo-shows in The White Cubicle Toilet Gallery (London) and La Loseta (San Juan), and has participated in numerous international group exhibitions including the 1 Bienal Tropical.
He is the co-founder of Proyectos Ultravioleta- a multifaceted platform for experimentation in contemporary art, based in the heart of Guatemala City. He is also co-founder of the Buró de Intervenciones Públicas, together with Christian Ochaita, through which they develop low cost high impact interventions in different cities worldwide since 2007. Recently, together with Jessica Kairé, they founded the Nuevo Museo de Arte Contemporáneo -NuMu- which positions itself as Guatemala’s first contemporary art museum.
Additionally, he is the Artistic Director of suelta, a bi-weekly online publication launched with Rodrigo Fuentes, which aims to bridge the gap between contemporary Latin American art and literature.
