Swedish artist Susanna Hesselberg’s pictures are like windows to broken realities. At a first glance the composition seems so simple but as you look deeper into it, the obviousness becomes distorted and amputated figures play on burial, disappearance, recovery and uncertainty. Whether it’s a man whose face is covered by smoke or a woman smashing hers into a mirror, Hesselberg never shows human faces and that way the bodies become silent. As François Bernard said, “The creator-artist reinvents the human species as free from the most basic laws of physics. But which has the upper hand? Is the body which is hiding in space, or is it space which imperceptibly devours the body with silent cruelty? There is no answer to this.” For these reasons, Susanna Hesselberg’s photographs are rare. She produces little, preferring to devote the her time to the development of each piece. “But ultimately, they are rare because her dreamlike world fashion images/mirrors, revealing our own contradictions, highlight the question: what do I agree to see in what I see?”
Her work was lately exhibited during Paris Photo Los Angeles and can now be seen at the School Gallery in Paris.
