Tadashi Kawamata was born in 1953 in Hokkaido, Japan. He lives and works in Paris and Tokyo.
Since his first exhibition in 1977, Kawamata has worked and exhibited in Japan and all over the world: the Venice Bienniale in 1982, Documenta 8 in 1982, the Sao Paulo International Biennial in 1987, Favela in Houston, Landscape, Bayou Riverside, Houston in 1991, the Bienniale d’Art Contemporain de Lyon in 1993, the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, Geneva in 1995, Le Passage Des Chaises, Festival d’Automne at the Saint Louis of Salpetriere Chapel, Paris in 1997, Tokyo Project: New Housing Plan, Tokyo in 1998, the 4th Shanghai Biennial in 2002, Detour et Des Tours , Le Creux d’Enfer, Thiers et Le Château Des Adhemar, Montelimar in 2005, and the Cathédrale Des Chaises, the Expérience Pommery #4, Reims in 2007.
Tadashi Kawamata produces installations in situ constructed in wood: these ephemeral constructions take the form of foot bridges, covered or not, towers, or gigantic huts. With the intention of linking the workspaces, he creates a link between the past and the present, the exterior and the interior. His work is not limited to an architectural study: it is concerned with the social context in which it is presented.
At the Atelier Calder, Tadashi Kawamata conceived the work Transfert, a project that was presented in two locations 19 miles apart: the exhibition space, at the Centre de Creation Contemporaine in Tours, and the place of residency at the Atelier Calder in Sache. The public was presented a video during their transport by bus between the two spaces, the travel time becoming a transition space incorporated into the project. Arriving at the Atelier, a footbridge linked the studio space to the living space of the house.
