Saudi Arabia presents itself with what is probably the most imposing architectural concept at Expo 2010 in Shanghai − a ship’s hull resting on columns with its surface forming an oasis surrounded by palm trees. The visitors inside stand on a conveyor belt that slowly transports them into the main room. It glides around the room and onto a bridge over the 1,600sqm concave projection surface that encompasses the entire floor. The room’s center and ceiling are covered by an oriental-like mirror mosaic. Compositions of floral forms, oriental patterns and poetic images of Saudi Arabia proceed from the room’s deepest point to fill the floor and walls in their entirety. The reflections from the mirror let the room appear to be without end.The spectators find themselves in the midst of a sea of continually changing pictures and sounds. An overwhelming poetic homage to this country and its people that displays both the beauty and pride of Saudi Arabia as well as its strength and striving for innovation.
Constructing a projection surface of this size of 1,600sqm presented both a conceptual and technically great challenge. Twenty-five HD projectors cover the entire room with strong image worlds that are connected without seams. Some of these come from IMAX materials. The sound for this production was recorded using an orchestra with 70 musicians.
