This series by Japanese artist Teppei Kaneuji is entitled Teenage Fan Club. Known for his found-object assemblages, the artist uses plastic toys, scissors, helmets, and in this case, removable hair, gluing them together in bizarrely fascinating and colorful arrangements.

Japanese artist Teppei Kaneuji is known for his ‘trash to treasure’ approach in making his art. His one-of-a-kind sculptures are found-object assemblages using different mediums each time and this time it’s removable dolls hair from figurines.

For project Teenage Fan Club his one self-appointed rule was to only use plastic hair to create these colourful tribal monsters. Found art has its fans and its haters – on the one hand you are not supporting waste culture by re-using materials and yet it receives criticism for not truly being original because you aren’t starting from scratch.

How anyone could state the above figurines aren’t unique and original (and pretty cute) in their own right is beyond me.

Born in 1978 in Osaka, now lives and works in Tokyo. Teppei Kaneuji’s artistic production is predominantly collage and assemblage of everyday commodities, found objects and images. He takes a playful but acutely formal approach to the materials in order to subtly negotiate and juggle contexts, borders and voids embedded in them, and to constitute an open metaphor and narrative.

Among other places, he has shown at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Trino), Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), Long March Space (Beijing), Guangzhou Museum of Art (Guangzhou), and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo).
