Tim Hawkinson was born in 1960 in San Francisco, California. He has a fine educational history, as he both graduated from San Jose State University and received an MFA from the University of California in 1989. Today, he is married and lives in Los Angeles. He is considered one of the most inventive and important sculptors of the modern age.
Tim Hawkinson works with a variety of different art forms, including drawing, painting, photography, video, installation, and sound, but his most popular works are sculptures. He is famed for making complex strucures with simple methods, tools, and parts; for instance, a bagpipe the size of a football stadium made from electrical work and plastic sheeting. This is not his only work to feature music; there is also his work “Pentecost”. This features twelve life-sized sculptures of himself that have been set up on a cardboard tree. These have all been programmed to play religious hymns. He is also renowned for creating both monumental and microscopic pieces with both kinetic and sound-producing elements. All in all, his work is based as much in science as it is in art, especially since he often creates new inventions and tools for his work.
Tim Hawkinson’s inspiration comes from his own body and trying to re-imagine it. Indeed, sometimes his body is even involved, such as when he uses his own fingernail clippings and his hair to make sculpture. He also enjoys expressing life, death, and the passage of time.
Today Hawkinson is represented by the Ace Gallery in Los Angeles.
