Ukiyo-e, or “pictures of floating worlds” were woodblock prints that became wildly popular in 17th -19th century Japan. Emerging as a spontaneous artistic development, they remain, to this day, as some of the most well-known imagery and, by extension, some of the most readily available glimpses into what life was like in Japan.

But this was before the age of computers, or even hand-drawn animation, so of course each represents a moment, frozen in time. But thawing those images and bringing them to life, sometimes realistically and other times surrealistically, is a Japanese animator who goes by the name Segawa 37.

Working with original images of Ukiyo-e,the animator has carefully computerized certain parts, putting them in motion. Some are done humorously, like the travelers watching a modern-day Shinkansen go by. But others are quite sincere. A total of 8 different Ukiyo-e GIFs were created for the purpose of entering into a GIF contest sponsored by Adobe.

Above, “Night Scene in the Yoshiwara” by Katsushika Oei is brought to life. Her interplay of light and shadow, a distinct style rare in woodblock prints, is subtly animated.

La artista de video Atsuki Segawa ha creado Ukiyo-e 2.0, un proyecto que transforma algunas obras de arte en madera antiguas en una serie de gifs animados. Ukiyo-e o “pinturas del mundo flotante” o estampa japonesa es un género de grabados producidos en Japón, que se hicieron populares del siglo 17 hasta al 19.

Este proyecto ha entrado a concursar en los Premios GIF 2015 de Japón. Segawa aseguró que estuvo pegando capa tras capa para poder lograr animar el trabajo de Katsushika Hokusai, conocido internacionalmente por su impresión de la gran ola de Kanagawa.

“Elegí la obra de Hokusai, porque las líneas en sus dibujos son realmente claras, así que es más fácil animarlos,” dijo Segawa. Para ello utilizó Adobe After Effects y Photoshop.

Ukiyo-e (traducido como “pinturas del mundo flotante”) fueron producidos en masa en Japón en el período de 1615 a 1868. Las impresiones son a menudo populares entre los viajeros; sus temáticas suelen presentar mujeres hermosas, actores de Kabuki de rostro severo, grandes países, erotismo y temas sobrenaturales.

Desde que comenzó el proyecto, los gifs de Segawa han tenido una retroalimentación inesperada en Twitter, uno de sus mayores rankings logró ser compartido 1.5k “Nunca pensé que sería tan popular”, admitió. “Me sorprendió incluso recibir mensajes de personas que viven en el extranjero, ya que todo lo que escribí en Twitter está en japonés.”

Un gif, de una mujer en una casa de té (Yoshida en Tokaido) que ve afuera mientras pasa un tren bala se inspiró en la vida real. “Hay un tren bala actualmente (ciudad de Toyohashi, en la prefectura de Aichi, en el centro de Japón)”, dijo Segawa.

Empresyonizmin ağababalarından, balerin resimleriyle hatırlayacağınız Degas’a ilham vermiş Ukiyo-e’nin etkisi Degas’la sınırlı kalmamış. Batılı empresyonistlerin o büyük sıçramayı yapıp modern sanatı doğurmalarında da Ukiyo-e’nin hakkı yenmez.
Şimdi yine Ukiyo-e, çorbasında tuzu bulunduğu modern sanatın en son ürünlerinden birine ilham oluyor. Ukiyo-e şaheserlerinden kabul edilen Katsushika Hokusai’nin “Fuji Dağı’nın 36 Görünümü” isimli serisi, Segawa thirty-seven adıyla tanınan sanatçı tarafından GIF’ler halinde yeniden yorumlanmış.
Bu yeni versiyonların statik kısmı yine Hokusai’nin orjinal işi, Segawa bunlara kompozisyonu absürd hale getirebilecek GIF’ler ekleyerek üç yüzyılı birbirine bağlayan işler çıkartmış.
