Work: The Golden Colonnade Installation, Vilnius, LT 2013-09-09. Authors: Ivane Ksnelashvili and Sebastiano Maiolino. Project Brief: ‘The Golden Colonnade’, an art installation created for ‘Vilnius Street Art Festival ’13’ organised by Ūla Ambrasaitė and Aušra Trakšelytė. It’s a first year of annual festival, where different artists have exposed their works publicly all around the Vilnius city center. Ernest Zacharevic (LT), Mark Jenkins & Sandra Fernandez (USA), UPPERSTUDIO – Ivane Ksnelashvili (GEO) & Sebastiano Maiolino (IT), Jurgis Tarabilda (LT), Antasnas Dubra (LT). Installation ‘The Golden Colonnade’, is investigating a numerous exciting spatial concepts, which embraces an inordinately high level of visibility; their goal is to essentially open up spaces that would have traditionally been noticed from public view, as well as provide attractions to rejuvenate existing well known spaces. The installation explores the possibilities of applying reflective material on one out of six Vilnius Town Hall columns by firstly covering it with plastic layer in order to protect the surface of column and then wrapping it in luminous golden paper lining (6X rolls – 60cm x 11m) which thereby allows to create a reflective and visually interesting, yet symbolic, meaning to an exceptional and valuable moment by changing its historical importance and function. Gold is a yellow precious metal, the chemical element of atomic number 79, it’s mainly used for decoration and its considered attractive by human. It is a thing that is fabulous, beautiful or brilliant, being rare, unique and shiny. Gold was applied from antiquity, not just for its beauty and splendour, but also for its unique versatility in other applications. The role of gold was not in the structure of the building, but its in its adornment and enhancement. Since ancient age, gold has always been harboured in human civilisation. It fascinates people because of its mysterious significance; religious artefacts, paintings, sculptures, coins, they were all made by gold.
