In 2013, establishing his sterling reputation as practitioners of sustainable architecture, Vincent Callebaut is selected to be in the list of the Top 50 Sustainable Architecture Award Members of the Green Planet Architects. In Frankfurt, he is nominee for the “Design German Awards 2014” for his project in Shenzhen “Asian Cairns, Sustainable Farmscrapers”. For the documentary presented by Arte Television called “Future by Starck”, he is selected to illustrate the future of our ecological cities. Vincent Callebaut, lead architect, participates to lectures in Bucharest, Bratislava, Moscow, Singapore, Paris, etc. in order to exhibit all his prospective and very positive visions for our eco-lifestyles inspired by biomimicry. His company is invited on several international competitions in all the emergent countries. The publishing house “Hachette” devotes to Vincent Callebaut a monograph in the Masters of Architecture Series.

In 2012, Vincent Callebaut presents his work at The International Art Fair of Abu Dhabi and he is invited to design, by the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, some green projects as a New Presidential Rest Houses Complex in Morocco and a New Panoramic Majlis in United Arab Emirates. In New York, he is nominee for the “World Technology Awards” in the Environment Category.

In 2011, Time Magazine has referred to his work as the best eco-utopian architect: “Imagining fantastical projects that address the world’s environmental and social ills.”

In 2010, Vincent Callebaut Architectures is awarded by BES Engineering Corporation as the first prize winner for the design and the construction of an ecological residential tower at the bottom of the Tower 101 in the heart of Taipei, Taiwan. This ecological tower called “Agora Garden” is under construction and will be delivered in 2016.

In 2009, the main sustainable projects of Vincent Callebaut are exhibited at the World Expo at Shanghai in 7 pavilions to illustrate the future of Ecopolises of tomorrow. In New York City, he creates the first emblematic eco-concept of Urban Farming called “Dragonfly, a metabolic farm for urban agriculture”.

In 2008, he publishes his second monograph “Archibiotic” in English & Chinese with the support of the United Asia Art & Design Cooperation at Beijing. He is confirmed as one of the most important leader in green architecture and low carbon emission living. From New York to Hong Kong crossing Brussels and Paris, Vincent Callebaut proposes with determination and conviction prospective and ecological projects by insufflating locally dialogs and meetings that try to raise our questionings on the society in which we live as citizen of a global world! Since, in the framework of his architectural firm and great collaborations (Jakob+MacFarlane, Claude Vasconi, Jacques Rougerie), he militates continuously for the sustainable development of the new Ecopolises via transdisciplinary strategies for an investigation architecture mixing biology to information and communication technologies. For the Principality of Monaco, Vincent Callebaut designs his self-sufficient manifest project called “Lilypad, a floating Ecopolis for Climate Refugees”.

In 2005, he was the finalist of the “RE-New Architecture Pleasures” awarding the 12 best figures of the Architecture in the French Community of Belgium. During the same year, the Edition Company Damdi of Seoul dedicated to him at the age of 28 its first architecture monograph detailing the story of his awarded and exhibited projects during worldwide spontaneous proposals and international competitions.

In 2001, he won the Grand Architecture Prize Napoléon Godecharle of the Fine Arts Academy in Brussels awarding the best hope of the Belgian architecture with its ecological project « Elasticity, an aquatic city of 50 000 inhabitants entirely autonomous». The jury appreciated at the same time « his dynamism, his expression force and the coherence of his concept » and recognised « a personality endowed with a remarkable aptitude giving well-founded expectations of great success and able thus to contribute to the fact that reputation of Belgium becomes a truth ». In 2000, Vincent Callebaut, is graduated with the Great Architecture Prize René Serrure awarding the best diploma project at the Institute Victor Horta in Brussels for its Parisian project «Metamuseum of Arts and Civilisations» Quay Branly. Then, thanks to the bursary Leonardo da Vinci attributed by the European Community, he decided to live in Paris to extend its critical thinking and its spatial inventiveness during two years of internship in agencies that fascinate him (Odile Decq Benoit Cornette Architectes Urbanistes, Massimiliano Fuksas).

French firm, Vincent Callebaut Architectures shared with us its competition entry for Taichung City Cultural Center, Fine Arts Museum & Public Library. The proposal named “Swallow’s Nest” is located at the North end of the new « Gateway Park » on the site of the old airport of Taichung city, the project is a true entrance door to the new urban ecosystem. Actually, the project develops itself under the shape of a three-dimensional Möbius’ ring that extrudes its triangular section around an elliptic path. This organic building is thus created by the simple repetition of a standardised section that turns eighty times clockwise by 4.5 degrees to make a full revolution of 360 degrees around a huge central patio, the “Endless Patio”. The architecture is inspired by the nature and seems to grow harmoniously such as a plant from the earth to the sky. This pure shape in horizontal spiral enables to create three huge vaults, true connexion hubs between the central patio and the cultural centre, the city and the park. The project comes from the natural repartition of the urban flows between the Gateway Avenue 2 (leading to Taiwan Tower in the South of the site), the Convention and Exhibition Centre (in the North) and the Gateway Park (spread from the North to the South). Eco-designed from bioclimatic rules, renewable energies and state-of-the-art technologies of Information and Communication, the new cultural center of Taichung city aims at being a pioneer project symbolising the symbiosis of the Nature and Human engineering sciences. Each architectural, structural and technical component is thought to provide a maximum of spatial and functional flexibility aiming at the construction of a building with zero carbon emission.

Möbius’ ring is based on 1000m² of groundfloor spread out on three great pilasters on which the three vaults set up with strength. This structural concept enables to liberate completely the ground by transforming it into a huge aquatic and floral garden. This open landscape multiplies the visual perspectives towards the Gateway Park and constitutes an permeable architecture to the flows which cross it. In order to limit the visual impact of the building volume, the Swallow’s Nest takes root into the ground by three great spiral banisters that extend the mineral or planted public spaces towards the main big reception hall of the center located underground at basement one. This creates a wide central agora where all the functions of reception of the public, tickets offices, shops and cafeterias centre around under a huge canopy in pretended steel structure and e-low glass. This canopy shrouds the space with a natural zenithal light. The hall gives also access to the convention center, to the educative workshops and to the archives of the cultural center.

To assure the protection of the building in case of earthquake, the base of the building sets up on earthquake-resistant supports which are located under the last parking level of the isolator floor. The horizontal movements of the centre are isolated from the earth by a seismic joint that surrounds all the perimeter of the basement levels. A moat is thus created between the floor edges and the slurry wall. This is covered by planted walls and becomes a peripheral light well that enables to ventilate and light up naturally the logistic functions of the museum and the library, of the scooters and cars park. The fire escapes are integrated along the slurry wall and lead to the open-air ground floor. Finally to protect this moat from typhoon, a glass canopy overhangs it by assuring thus the tightness of the earthquake-resistant system.

The strength of the concept resides in the genesis of a complex geometry for the steel structure from the repetition of standard and simple elements. Actually, the typical section in the shape of an isosceles triangle is made with three great tubular beams forming an arch. The 80 arches are linked together at their centre and their ends by mega-columns which form the main edge and spread the loads to the ground. The twist at 360 degrees of the three faces of the triangle is designed under the shape of three ruled surfaces easily adjusted and decomposable into flat panels for a more pragmatic feasibility and a better cost control.

The eight floor levels draw arabesques along the three-dimensional ribbon by ramifying the tubular structure. The whole forms a functional thick pile where each museum gallery or reading space is double oriented either towards the Endless Patio or toward the city. The plans are dynamic and generate a multiplicity of spatial typologies with variable height in simplex, duplex, triplex. The flexibility is obtained by a double-decks system that pinches a radiant alveolar beam network. This network of perforated beams enables to integrate all the flows of canalisation, air conditioning, electricity and optical fibres in order to enable an infinite transferability of each space and assuring everywhere an optimal ceiling height.

The floors are crossed by three cores entirely planted by living walls that create three vertical gardens welcoming visitors from the central agora as well as MEP flows of inputs and outputs. To highlight these true spatial landmarks, they are separated from the slabs by hollow joints covered by glass enabling thus to see the cores, from the ground floor to the solar roof, by transparency on their whole height. Finally, a snake of escalators and panoramic elevators in structural glass enable to take advantage of the green landscape of the Gateway Park and to create thus an hyper outside-inside connectivity. Between these tree towers purifying and cooling down the interior atmosphere by evapotranspiration of plants, the functions are organised in open spaces interlaced by themes between the Arts, the Literature, the Sciences and the Foreign Languages for the library for example, or between the permanent and temporary exhibitions for the museum.

The Swallow’s Nest is the future landmark of the Gateway Park. The project is thus crystalline assuring a maximum of transparency and lighting effects by the treatment of façades, from the integration of renewable energies, intelligent glasses and effects of progressive translucency. Actually, the glittering skin is made of E-Low glass with high rate of thermal isolation. Like a musical score opening out along the glass ribbons, pixels of photovoltaic solar cells and panels of translucent glass and stainless steel assure 50% of opaque façades in order to avoid greenhouse effect on the one hand and to protect the exhibited works on the other hand.

From the Endless Patio, the Gateway Park or the Gateway Park Avenue 2, the facades create mirror effects by reflecting the rustles and the vibrations of the city and of the surrounding nature. These façades question us by transforming themselves in mirror of our society and act as a spectre for the creation of the contemporary art and for the protection of the knowledge. At daytime, the adjusted surfaces of the façades degrade the azure blue towards the tender greens of the luxuriant vegetation of the park. Whereas during the night, the Klein blue of the stars reverses progressively to gold colour of the dawn and the lights of the urban lighting. The new centre of Taichung has been transformed into a nest of preservation and cultural creation that sees the birth of history in real time, the sensitivities and the Taiwanese philosophies mixed worldwide. In this sustainable architecture dedicated to the biodiversity and the right balance of the action of Human being on Nature, the museum intertwines in the library, the plant embraces the mineral, and the shadow mixes up with the light. The swallow’s nest is a glittering landmark which expresses with elegance the swirling of the imagination. Like the Möbius’ ring, it is a cultural centre without end which will constantly question, intrigue and attract the attention of its visitors.

W tajwańskim mieście Taizhong już wkrótce ma powstać największy na świecie budynek inspirowany wstęgą Möbiusa. Swallow’s Nest to obiekt zaprojektowany przez Vincent Callebaut Architectures, który strukturalnie przypomina jaskółcze gniazdo. Na poziomie gruntu, Swallow’s Nest ma posiadać sieć kanałów i fos, zaś ściany odporne na trzęsienia ziemi dostarczać energii dzięki zainstalowanym panelom fotowoltaicznym. Konstrukcja została tak zaprojektowana, by przebywające w niej osoby, w trakcie dnia mogły jak najwięcej korzystać z naturalnego światła. Umożliwią to bardzo przejrzyste okna. Budowa Swallow’s Nest pochłonie ok. 260 mln zł i ruszy jeszcze w tym roku.

vincent callebaut architectures事务所设计的“the swallows nest”位于台湾台中中央公园东北入口处,像一颗被雕琢的文化宝石。这块基地之前是一个飞机场,后经改造成为台中市水湳生态区的城市生态系统。建筑形态是一个围绕椭圆形莫比乌斯换旋转了80次的三角形体量。因为围绕一个椭圆形螺旋旋转,体量从地面上升起,在中心形成一个拱形的开口,成为整个建筑的“无尽头的天井”。几何形的顶点沉入地下,创造了一个巨大的入口大厅,内设前台、售票处、店铺和咖啡厅。玻璃顶盖盘旋在首层空间上空,让整个区域充满阳光。这个地下空间通过一个大厅与会议中心、workshops和档案馆相连。最底层由地下停车场和防自然灾害系统组成。

Vincent Callebaut Architectures diseñó ‘El Nido de las Golondrinas” es una joya facetas de la cultura anclaje del acceso noroeste del Parque de Taichung en Taiwán. (Mie, 12 Jun 2013). Antiguamente un campo de aviación, el espacio se está desarrollando como un ecosistema urbano en el distrito Shui Nan pasadera ecológica de la ciudad de Taichung. La forma del edificio es un triángulo girado 80 veces alrededor de una cinta de Moebius elíptica. Se mueve en espiral alrededor de una elipse, el volumen se eleva desde el plano del suelo, dejando aberturas abovedados a la central de vacío, que se convierte en el “patio sin fin ‘. Los vértices de la geometría se hunden por debajo del suelo, creando un amplio pasillo de entrada con recepción, taquilla, tiendas y cafés sobre los niveles de estacionamiento y sistemas de protección contra los desastres naturales.

Vincent Callebaut là kiến trúc sư tài năng người Bỉ. Ông đã cho ra đời các dự án kiến trúc hùng vĩ nhưng vẫn hết sức thân thiện với môi trường. Vincent Callebaut chính là tác giả của các công trình nổi tiếng và độc nhất vô nhị chẳng hạn như mô hình thành phố nổi, tòa nhà chống khói (Paris), thành phố hương thơm (Hồng Công), công trình mắt bão (Seoul). Công trình này được thiết kế nằm ở lối vào phía đông bắc công viên Đài Trung, Đài Loan. Nó được xem như là biểu tượng viên ngọc quý theo quan niệm văn hóa nơi đây. Khu vực này trước đây vốn là sân bay, nhưng ngày nay nó đã được đầu tư, thiết kế lại và phát triển theo hướng khu đô thị sinh thái nằm trong khu vực cửa ngõ sinh thái Thủy Nam của thành phố Đài Trung. Công trình hiện đại nằm ngay trung tâm với cây xanh bao quanh.

Kiến trúc của công trình có hình dạng tam giác, được xoay 80 lần lần xung quanh một dải Mobius hình elip.Chúng ta có thể thấy đó là dạng hình xoắn ốc xoay xung quanh một hình elip. Toàn bộ công trình được nâng cao so với mặt đất, tạo nên vòm khẩu độ để lộ khoảng trống trung tâm. Nó tạo ra phần sảnh rộng tưởng chừng như vô tận với một phần chìm dưới mặt đất. Đây là tiền sảnh lớn được sử dụng làm không gian tiếp nhận, bán vé ra vào, làm cửa hàng và quán cà phê. Phần mái vòm bằng kính có tác dụng rất lớn trong việc lấy ánh sáng cho cả không gian. Nó giúp cho công trình lấy được nguồn ánh sáng trực tiếp từ mặt trời đồng thời góp phần phục vụ cho các dich vụ bên trong công trình. Từ ngoài chúng ta cũng có thể thấy được sự mềm mại mà không phải công trình kiến trúc nào cũng có.

Một hội trường cũng được thiết kế nhằm kết nối không gian ngầm này đến trung tâm hội nghị, hội thảo và nơi tài liệu lưu trữ. Tầng thấp nhất là bãi đậu xe ngầm và hệ thống chống thiên tai. Bên trong công trình rất rộng và thoáng. Có thể nói với thiết kế mái vòm bằng kính, kiến trúc sư đã tạo nên sự thân thiện giữa công trình với thiên nhiên xung quanh.
