PLAYTIME
← →

PLAYTIME

This IS NOT an anti-paparazzi project. This is an experimental design project. We do not care about celebrities and their paparazzi. We care about experimentation, metaphors and … Jacques Tati.
2 interactive dresses. Super organza and electronic devices.
Inspired by director Jacques Tati’s film of the same title, Playtime lets the viewer reflect on appearances and the perception of objects in space. Compared to haute couture by French writer François Ede, the film presents a world where modern architecture and urban surveillance are overtly present, while using stylistic techniques to fool the viewer, such as trompe l’oeil and mirror effects. Taken into the world of fashion, this critical and playful point of view allows Ying Gao to explore the concept of transformation, like in Walking City and Living Pod. In the context of a fashion show with sounds and lighting, the possibility for the viewer to photograph or shoot the pieces on video is rendered difficult: the dresses will appear blurry in the recorded image. The first dress will appear blurry and the second dress, for example, will react to the flash of the camera, itself becoming a light source when a photo is taken.

Ying Gao
Montreal-based fashion designer and professor at UQAM, recipient of the Phyllis-Lambert Design Montréal Grant, Ying Gao questions our assumptions about clothing by combining urban design, architecture and multimedia. She explores the construction of the garment, taking her inspiration from the transformations of the social and urban environment. She is the only fashion designer included by the British magazine Wallpaper in its Canadian Top 40. Recognized worldwide, her designs are frequently shown in museums and galleries. Design is the medium, situated in the technological rather than in the textile realm. Sensory technologies allow garments to become more playful and interactive. Ying Gao explores both the status of the individual, whose physical contours are transformed by external interferences, and the garment’s function as a fragile protective space. Her work testifies to the profound mutation of the world in which we live and carries with it a radical critical dimension that transcends technological experimentation.

Playtime is a tribute to Jacques Tati, NOT an anti-paparazzi project. This is an experimental design project. We do not care about celebrities and their paparazzi. We care about experimentation, metaphors and … Jacques Tati.
Inspired by Jacques Tati’s film Playtime (1967), this series illustrates these garments’ ability to metamorphose when one tries to take their picture. Playtime 1 reacts to a camera flash by contracting and becoming blurred as the fabric, activated by light-sensitive sensors, begins to undulate. For ying gao, this blurriness is a space of freedom which defies the supremacy of the image, that capital element of the fashion milieu.
