Working as a photojournalist and artist, Stephen Wilkes is well known for his photographs of abandoned and deteriorating buildings, including a series of the dilapidated hospital wings of Ellis Island, a project that resulted in a $6-million grant to restore the island. More recently, he created the sweeping panoramas of his series “Day to Night”, which dramatically shift from dawn to midnight in a single image; Wilkes created this effect by taking up to 1,500 photographs during the course of one day, eventually narrowing them down to 50 and combining them digitally. His work has been featured in leading magazines and newspapers including Vanity Fair, Time, Life Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine.

With over two decades of professional experience, photographer Stephen Wilkes is well known for his fine and commercial photography. With countless awards, honours and five major exhibitions in the last five years alone, it’s very possible you’ve already come across Stephen’s incredible work.
In the series entitled Day to Night, Wilkes took hundreds of photographs over the span of a day (some shots took up to 15 hours), carefully adjusting the shutter to allow for proper exposure as the sun set. To create the images below, Wilkes blends about 50 images into one incredible large-format panoramic.
The images below do not do justice to seeing these works in-person, as the final output were limited edition, gallery prints sized at 30″ x 40″ (76 x 101 cm) and 48″ x 60″ (122 x 152 cm). The first photograph in this series was the one of the High Line as part of a shoot for New York Magazine back in 2009.

Wilkes conta que o processo é demorado e minucioso. I photograph from locations and views that are part of our collective memory. Working from a fixed camera angle, I capture the fleeting moments of humanity and light as time passes. After 24 hours of photographing and over 1500 images taken, I select the best moments of the day and night. Cando un fotógrafo quiere hacer la “foto perfecta”, en cuanto a luz y efecto se refiere, puede tirarse horas y horas mirando desde el mismo ángulo hasta que lo consigue, hasta que deja plasmado el momento perfecto. Pero, ¿y si lo que quiere es ver el conjunto del paso de las horas en una sola fotografía?

Stephen Wilkes, fotógrafo estadounidense, ha hecho justamente eso en uno de sus trabajos, que ha titulado Day to Night. Sus fotografías no tratan sólo de un momento, sino de coleccionar varios momentos, tantos como para que en una sola fotografía puedan contar la historia de un sólo lugar. Al mirar por primera vez la obra, el paisaje parece que nos desconcentra, que está descentrado, ¿cómo puede un eclipse flotar debajo de las nubes? La realidad del conjunto es mucho más sencilla, es la unión del día y la noche en un solo papel, sin dejar que desaparezca ni un solo momento intermedio, haciendo que ambos se fundan.

Stephen Wilkes est un photographe Américain basé à New York qui depuis une vingtaine d’années sévit dans le monde de la photographie d’art. Tantôt pour son propre plaisir, et c’est notamment le cas de cette première collection que nous vous présentons baptisée “From Day to Night“, tantôt pour des magazines comme le Times, ses inspirations sont variables et ses clichés tous aussi différents les uns des autres.

Dans cette série, l’artiste a été inspiré et a photographié plusieurs endroits à New York à deux moments distincts de la journée, quand il faisait jour, puis la même photo de nuit. Après un travail pour assembler les deux photos, le résultat est assez surprenant et très réussi.

Mais parce que chez Atypique nous ne considérons pas qu’un artiste se résume à quelques clichés d’une même série, vous trouverez dans la suite de l’article d’autres photos qu’il a réalisé lors de ces différents périples, comme à Cuba notamment.

Từ trước đến nay, giới yêu nhiếp ảnh vẫn quan tâm đến việc làm sao để lột tả vẻ đẹp của khung cảnh ban ngày hay ban đêm trong những bức hình riêng biệt, chứ ít ai nghĩ đến chuyện đưa chúng vào chung một bức hình.

Thế nhưng, có hai nhiếp ảnh gia đã mạnh dạn thử sức và thành công với ý tưởng ấy, đó là Richard Silver và Stephen Wilkes.

Nhiếp ảnh gia Richard Silver đã đưa ra ý tưởng “dòng thời gian” vào những bức hình “cắt lát”, gồm nhiều lát ảnh ghép song song với nhau. Chúng ghi lại cùng một cảnh, song trong những thời điểm khác nhau, lấy bối cảnh ở thành phố New York (Mỹ).

Bộ ảnh có tên “New York Sliced”, mỗi ảnh gồm 25 – 30 lát, chụp trong khoảng 1,5 tiếng. Ở phía trên bức ảnh là thời gian chính xác mà mỗi mảnh ghép được ghi hình. Tuy có những lát cắt chỉ chụp cách nhau vài phút, song mỗi lát cắt lại có độ sáng khác nhau, do thời gian chụp là từ lúc Mặt trời bắt đầu lặn đến khi đêm xuống.

Đây là khoảng thời gian mà ánh sáng có sự thay đổi rõ rệt nhất. Vì thế, trong bộ ảnh này người xem có thể theo dõi sự chuyển đổi ngày – đêm một cách rõ nét, khác với sự chuyển tiếp mượt mà trong ảnh Stephen Wilkes.

Series này còn đặc biệt ở chỗ, tác giả đã chọn các tòa nhà có kiến trúc hiện đại ở New York làm tâm điểm cho mỗi bức hình. Dự án vẫn đang được tiến hành và đây chỉ là một vài trong số rất nhiều tòa nhà ở New York được chọn để ghi hình.

Wilkes nảy ra ý tưởng cho series này vào năm 2009 khi đi tác nghiệp cho New York Magazine ở Manhattan. “Đồ nghề” của anh là chiếc máy ảnh kỹ thuật số 39 megapixel có giá đỡ, đặt trên sân thượng một tòa nhà cách mặt đất chừng 15m.

Trung bình mỗi ngày anh chụp khoảng 250 tấm, lấy cùng một cảnh, nhưng thời điểm khác nhau để có cường độ ánh sáng khác nhau. 30 – 50 bức hình trong đó sẽ được chọn để “pha trộn” liền mạch với Photoshop, tạo nên bức ảnh panorama cuối cùng có toàn cảnh từ ngày tới đêm.
