“Floating Orchestra” by UK-based Poietic Studio is a musical instrument that levitates 19 balls on jets of air–each ball represents an instrument, with instrument volume corresponding to ball height. The apparatus is controlled by an iPhone.

It’s proven to be hugely successful in engaging the public of all ages. A fun and engaging experience, that mixes digital technology with the physical world. There’s something intrinsically captivating about a levitating sphere and to have direct control over those spheres is a magical experience.

‘floating orchestra’ by london-based poietic studio (richard harvey and keivor stainer) is an unconventional electronic
instrument controlled by iPhone. the orchestra is composed of levitating balls whose physical height determines their volume.
although the studio intends that future renditions of the project are controlled via gestures, in the current model an iPhone
application permits users to adjust the sounds and height and angle of the raising balls.

the project uses a lightuino microcontroller, linked to a max msp application, to vary the power transmitted to each of 19 air compressors. the iPhone application feeds data to the controller via wifi.

the designers note: ‘this idea is a great example of our curiosity led approach to the development of poietic studio’s work.
it began with a happy accident when we discovered the levitational effects of an air compressor and a sphere, [and] this mindset of play has remained a focal point from concept through to the final piece.the max app [used],
c74, includes a linear actuator, allowing the entire piece to go on one side. we wanted to demonstrate the amazing gravity-defying properties that this kind of levitation is capable of.’

Poietic es un estudio Londinense formado por Richard Harvey y John Keivor.
Ambos han creado esta ingeniosa aplicación para iPhone llamada “Orquesta flotante” que permite controlar un sofisticado sistema de propulsión de aire que a su vez controla 19 bolas al ritmo de la música.
Las pelotas suben y bajan al ritmo del instrumento que está asociada a ellas produciendo un efecto espectacular. Según sus desarrolladores esta aplicación permite unir el mundo de la tecnología digital con el mundo físico, convirtiendo su creación en algo mágico.

Floating Orchestra est une oeuvre d’art numérique qui permet de visualiser de la musique. En effet, dix-neuf boules s’élèvent dans les airs en fonction du volume sonore des instruments de musique d’un orchestre.

Ce montage, Floating Orchestra, est intéressant car il permet de créer un évènement physique à partir d’un évènement immatériel.

Les dix-neuf buses d’air soufflent un flux d’air permettant de mettre en lévitation des boules en polystyrène, en fonction du volume, les buses soufflent plus ou moins fort.

L’ensemble est pilotable en plus à l’aide d’un iPhone permettant ainsi de faciliter la réalisation de fonctionnalités supplémentaires comme l’inclinaison du plateau. d’ailleurs dans cette partie, je me suis bien pris la tête à essayer de comprendre comment les boules restaient au dessus des buses…

Durch Technik kann man Musik und Kunst allgemein auf ganz besondere Art und Weise präsentieren, sei es zum Beispiel durch das DVS DJ Pult oder die Weinöffner-Skulptur. Das kuriose Gerät um das es in unserem heutigen Artikel, stellt die Musik in einer ganz anderen Form da. Aus Musik-Playern kennt man bereits die Equalizer, die Musik in sich bewegenden Balken darstellt. Diese auf einem Bildschirm zu sehen, ist jedoch auf Dauer sehr monoton, daher schafft das neuste “Kunstwerk” von Poietic Studio für diese Zwecke eine beeindruckende Abhilfe – es nennt sich Floating Orchestra:

Wie anfangs schon erklärt, handelt es sich bei diesem Gerät im Prinzip um einen speziellen Equalizer als Skulptur. Er basiert auf einer Grundplatte, die 19 Luftdüsen “beherrbergt” welche leichte Styroporkugeln bewegen. Die Stärke des Luftstroms und damit die Höhe der Kugel über der Düse variiert mit der Lautstärke des jeweiligen “Musikbestandteils” den die darstellt. Die gesamte Grundplatte mitsamt der Düsen lässt sich außerdem kippen und dabei können sich die Kugeln trotzdem ganz normal bewegen, da der Luftstrom sie so umströmt, dass sie genau senkrecht über der Düse fixiert sind.
Bei laufender Musik können Zuhörer bzw. Zuschauer dadurch einen Tanz der Kugeln genießen. Was haltet ihr allgemein von dieser technischen Präsentation von Kunst aller Art?

iPhone 的功能越來越來多，現在還能拿來玩藝術。由倫敦 Poietic Studio 所創造的乒乓樂團，利用 iPhone 來控制氣體吹出的大小，然後來製造出乒乓球浮動的感覺，搭配起音樂後感覺乒乓球如栩如生。
